What on earth is happening to you, Australia?

This week, terrible heat and wildfires struck Australia. Now, it's dust storms.

Don't let the beauty fool you...

It is so hot in Australia, Time.com says, that the weather service there has had to come up with new colors for its heat map. And gasoline is evaporating as it's pumped (Seriously, you have to read this).

Oh, and a cyclone is heading for landfall.

It occurs to me that Australia is the setting or source of more than a few apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic films. Perhaps now we know why.

Some that come to mind:

On the Beach (1959)
The Last Wave (1977)
Mad Max (1979)

I'm sure the True North blog can explain either why this is happening, or why Australia deserves it.
