The lessons of the hoax video

By now you've probably seen the video of the eagle snatching a kid from a park.

A lot of work went into proving that it's a fake, including this proof (courtesy of this tweeter)that the eagle's shadow disappeared when it shouldn't have...

But now, three students in a design class in Montreal have taken credit for the hoax, and the school has put out a press release touting the number of hoaxes its students have pulled thanks to the things they learned at the school, a release so ridiculous that it's probably fake, too.

That's a little sad, but not as sad as this: Nobody seemed to have determined it was a hoax purely on the basis of the absurdity of the notion that someone would keep filming while a raptor swooped down to steal a baby nearby.

When this exploded onto Reddit, someone pointed out some other problems with the video too (here)
