It's time for deep questions and Internet videos

Posted at 2:00 PM on November 28, 2012 by Bob Collins (1 Comments)

This week-old video is zipping across the Internet and picking up speed, forcing us to think why some young people stand out more than others? Where does curiosity come from? Why are some people curious and others are content not to know possibilities?

And as long as we're on the subject of big questions and Internet videos, we might as toss this one into the mix, too. Does the universe have a purpose. I'll hang up and listen.

Cute and well-designed video on the universe, but the author, who is an otherwise phenomenal scientist, appears to be deficient in his knowledge of the philosophical debates that go on about this topic. He ends up making lots of assumptions which may or may not be warranted.

One example: "So if the purpose of the universe was to create humans, then the cosmos was embarassingly inefficient about it." Efficient according to whose standards? An engineer's or a grand artist's? It makes a world of difference.
