John McCain vs. the people who fear Muslims

Does John McCain ever wonder what's in the water in Minnesota?

The Arizona senator is denouncing Rep. Michele Bachmann's suggestion that the Muslim Brotherhood has "infiltrated" the Obama administration.

McCain took to the Senate floor today to defend Huma Abedin, a deputy chief of staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, named by Bachmann last month in calling for an investigation into whether the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated the department.

McCain told the Senate today that the letter is "an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman (See clip here)."

Here's the full text of his speech.

Here's the "money quote:"

"This is about who we are as a nation and who we still aspire to be. What makes America exceptional among the countries of the world is that we are bound together as citizens not by blood or class, not by sect or ethnicity, but by a set of enduring, universal and equal rights that are the foundation of our constitution, our laws, our citizenry, and our identity. When anyone, not least a member of Congress, launches specious and degrading attacks against fellow Americans on the basis of nothing more than fear of who they are and ignorance of what they stand for, it defames the spirit of our nation, and we all grow poorer because of it."

If this sounds a bit familiar to you, you might be remembering an October 2008 McCain appearance in Lakeville.

John McCain is truly an honorable man. Michele Bachmann has no honor and is an embarrassment to Minnesota and the House of Representatives. Thank you, Senator McCain.

I haven't had too many good things to say about Old Navy, but this these are a couple of his finer moments. Well done, Senator!

Michele Bachmann is the Lucielle Ball of Congress. We keep re-electing her in Minnesota just to keep her around for laughs. Noone really takes her seriously.

//Does John McCain ever wonder what's in the water in Minnesota?

I was going to say he more likely wonders what sort of fearful alien is inside Rep. Bachman's head, but then I realized that the Minnesotans in her district keep electing her, so yeah, I bet he wonders that.

How DO we get rid of her? Between the Catholics and born-again Christians and gun and abortion people in this district, she has just barely enough to win time after time.

I would be very ashamed if I voted for her. I am embarrassed to live in the same state as her. She just likes to hear herelf talk.

It's intriguing to note that the speech does not mention Michele Bachmann. McCain did well in denying one who appears to have lost all grace or purpose in her quest for attention.

ack

I want so much to say something about Michelle and her being elected but I'm afraid Bob will ban me :)

Just another attempt to turn the clock back to the good ol' days of the 1950s.

// McCain did well in denying one who appears to have lost all grace or purpose in her quest for attention.

I believe Senate rules prohibit such mention.

You should have posted the clip of Ed Harris instead. It was more dramatic.

I'm with linda!

Are there no other intelligent Minnesotans deserving of being in the Congress to represent you?
Is it all a joke to most of you?
How can you treat the governance of our country with such blatant disregard?
Ms Bachmann is on the Intelligence Committee and yet one source for her letter was a right wing internet blog. The other was a partisan GOP report decried on the Senate floor by McCain himself.
Has it come to the point where voters are COMPLETELY OBLIVIOUS to the behavior of their representatives?
Doesn't anybody care?

Jeff,

Only a minority of Minnesotans get to vote in Bachmann's district. She plays well in her district, apparently, but not really anywhere else.

Kudos to McCain for doing the right thing on this particular issue.

But before embarrassing oneself by referring to him as "a truly honorable man", I would suggest doing a bit of homework.

Or if you don't want to do your own research, you can read this.

MB is crazy - like a fox. She full well knows that each time she throws a firebomb like this it is raw meat to her base and money in the bank. The coverage is worth more than an ad buy, and now that she has been chastised, she gets to play the victim, too. Yet she is never censured by her own party, as she is such a fund-raising machine. She "wins" every way you measure it.

David Poretti - "MB is crazy - like a fox."

Substantial research (and several thousand years of history) indicates that there is no correlation between the effectiveness of a politician and their level of sanity. The Congresswoman being a prime example.

Jim - while I agree with your latest comment, please consider this question: Is MB really that unwired, or does she know exactly what she is doing when she does her whacky MB show? I think that she truly believes much of what she says (however devoid of factual basis and crazy), but I also think she has been rewarded so often and so well, that she fires these missles out quite strategically and with full understanding of the risk/reward equation.

David - good question. Yes, I think that she is in fact diagnostically mentally ill. Severe narcissistic personality disorder with delusional tendencies and borderline personality disorder.

This is in no way cancels her ability to learn what behaviors serve to reward her desires.

The greater tragedy is that there are so many people who agree with what she says and does.

Coming soon from MB - I am the innocent victim...
