From Itasca to New Orleans, the dream of infinite flight, where was God in Aurora, was chivalry ever alive, and the wireless generation.

Ode to the family reunion

We didn't have a big extended family growing up. The Massachusetts Collinses splintered from the Ohio Collinses in the '40s. There are McFarlands in Vermont and upstate New York, but I don't know them very well. My wife and children are the only connection to Minnesota. I've got cousins scattered in the wind, but in the age of travel, it's hard enough to keep even the direct family tied together, and the truth is: we don't do a very good job of it.

So it's heartwarming to read today's Minnesota Prairie Roots post by the esteemed Audrey Kletscher Helbling on the family reunion of the descendants of Rudolph and Mathilda Kletscher in Vesta.

Despite the feelings of closeness evoked at a reunion, the reality is that we are connected now primarily by memories and blood, not by the intertwining of our lives today. For the most part, we've moved away from the prairie and see each other only at the reunion or at the funerals of family members.

Several years ago, my sister Lanae and I decided we needed to infuse new energy into the reunion if we were to keep the next generation interested in remaining connected. That meant offering activities which would create memories. And so we, and other family members, have planned games. This year was no exception.

A lot of high falutin' technology conspires to drive extended families apart. Sometimes it only takes a gunnysack to bring them back together.

Minneapolis lights up housing scene

For a region that looked like a real estate mutt for much of the last year or so, the Minneapolis area is suddenly on the upswing when it comes to the resale value of homes.

The latest Case Shiller housing price survey, released today for May, shows Minneapolis recorded a 3.1 percent increase in home prices over April in the seasonally unadjusted data. That's the second-best April-to-May performance (last year's 3.7% increase is the record) since Minneapolis was added to the data in the 1980s.

Over the course of the year, the Minneapolis area's housing prices have increased 4.7%. That's the best year-over-year increase since 2010.

Of course, it doesn't make up for the 38 straight months of declining prices (compared to a year ago) the area recorded when the housing market collapsed, and the price index is still well off home resale prices of 2010.

So is this it? Is the big rebound underway? Not everyone thinks so.

"Household formation is very much determined by economic circumstances," Gary Shilling, a financial analyst, tells NPR . "And right now they're very negative."

Shilling usually takes the dim view of the housing market, pointing out that people still need jobs to buy houses and jobs are in short supply while the number of available houses isn't.

The big buildup fizzles for some businesses at Olympics

Remember when Saint Paul businesses stocked up and added staff in anticipation of all of the business the 2008 Republican National Convention in the city would generate? The city ended up deserted.

Some London shops are going through the same thing now...

Chicken rights

Posted at 4:11 PM on July 31, 2012 by Bob Collins (6 Comments)

Should chickens have the freedom to flap their wings?

That's at the heart of a hearing in Washington today on whether there should be federal guidelines for the size of chicken coops and nests. The hearing was held on a California senator's proposal for federal standards, even as states are imposing separate standards. That's made it difficult for the egg industry, which frequently ships to many different states.

The proposed federal legislation is modeled after California, which passed a law that hens be able to stretch their wings and turn around.

The federal legislation initiative picked up a little steam after the Humane Society released this video -- yes, it's gross -- detailing where a lot of your eggs come from.

A group representing big egg producers says it can live with a deal being cut. Smaller producers say it'll drive them out of business.

A Republican on the panel cited a similar effort in Europe, where egg prices went up and the supply went down. But supporters say the legislation gives farmers 18 years to figure out how to design a coop that allows a hen to turn around.

That they would need 18 years to do it may speak to a larger problem.
