His work in Afghanistan led to his creation of the 2010 Oscar-nominated documentary Restrepo.

"We do these young men an injustice in not fully documenting their reality," Hetherington said.

I am sorry for his family and friends. And I am sad we have lost someone so commited and so motivated to his work. He did it for us so we understand the horrors of war, and for that I am deeply grateful. I wish everyone could come home.
