Embracing Winter: The rink

Because of a disc problem in the official back of News Cut, I haven't been able to get out to the local ice skating rink this season. But Locally Grown Northfield's Griff Wigley has certainly captured the elegance of skating rinks at night here in flyover country. The only things missing are the skaters.

January is a brilliant month for the hearty souls who live here, alternately cursed and embraced. Seems to me we need a photographic reminder every now and again. If you got one you'd like to add that captures January, please send it to me and I'll try to put something together.

Bob- Godspeed with the healing. I would love to move my Costa Rican wife and our young children from our current home in southern California to my beloved Minnesota, but I fear that my old bod wouldn't weather it as well as it did 20 years ago, and my wife would probably slit my throat in my sleep some cold January night :-)

Bob: Do you have an unofficial back too? Disc problems are the worst; my soon to be ex had surgery 15 years ago for a herniated disc-many years later the pain moved up his back to a new location. I wish you a slow, careful, long lasting recovery.

Cara - It appears that we have somewhat conflicting healing messages for our beloved blogger Bob. While yours is indubitably the more rational, I would bet that when it hurts an 11 on a scale of 1-10, Godspeed would be the preferred velocity :-)

Cara and Bob - my bad. I mistakenly thought that "Godspeed" implied rapid. It does not. So Bob, make that Machspeed on your recovery. :-)

The outdoor ice rink, a miracle made by a cold week and a guy with a garden hose.

The secret to outdoor rinks is knowing the bumps, divots and bad ice. There is nothing so sweet as watching the hockey team from across the tracks go sprawling as you weave through the potholes and fire a puck at their hapless goalie.

Ah, the winters before indoor rinks and Zambonies.
