One Picture: The pilgrimage

The only way to really come close to understanding the scale of the pilgrimage to Mecca is to click the image for a larger view. And even that doesn't do it justice.

The Boston Globe's The Big Picture has many more images, including one showing thousands of tents set up to handle some of the crowd. Each one has air conditioning.

Brother Ali has been 'live tweeting' about the pilgrimage. It's interesting and yet so remote to those of us who don't have a Mecca in our religious lives.
I really like this article on how the Saudi government hired some crowd dynamics researchers to redesign how people flow through the stages of the hajj. One big change--they made most of it one-way, so you weren't fighting the stream of people.
