You are: The trapped miners

You're a Chilean miner, trapped underground with several dozen colleagues for 10 weeks. You're being raised to the surface one-by-one to be reunited with your family. You try to think of something prolific to say to the world upon your return to it. What is it? (Submit your answer below)

Chilean miners, an end to "don't ask-don't tell", France makes a big stink about raising the 60-year-old retirement age, and is your dog depressed? Those are the items in today's conversation with The Current's Mary Lucia.

Here's a question: How long would a random sampling of 33 Minnesota State legislators last trapped in an underground mine? How long before they would go all Lord-Of-The-Flies?

I don't have an entry for your I Am A Chilean Miner game, but I do have a question:

Why has no one at MPR yet created a half-hour weekly news roundup show starring you and Mary Lucia? You guys are seriously the most entertaining 6-8 minutes of the day, and I, for one, would totally tune in for a full-length version.

Collins & Looch. Fridays at 6, in the old In The Loop slot. I'm completely serious about this.

If I came up from underground like that I don't know what I'd say.

But considering what I know about these miners, I'm guessing there will be a lot of Praising God and thanking the rescuers.

But I do know that if I got stuck underground with 32 of my co-workers for that long, I would go insane. I'm getting crazy just working with them regularly.

Sam has a point. Isn't that the kind of unstuffy program the public radio survey said was missing. Serious news from the, hum what to call it, water cooler perspective.

Thank you, but it wouldn't work. It's not scripted as it is now and if you try make a half hour out of it, you ruin the conversation and then it just becomes another show.

Plus, neither one of us has the attention span to do anything for more than 5 minutes.

OK - 'best of' show on Friday - replay the M-T.

I think you are, as always, not giving yourself enogh credit. Your short attention span is the show. Besides wouldn't that give you one more thing for job security?

I'm with BJ - perhaps an end-of-week podcast? A fun show to listen to on the drive home?

I'm with BJ too....I love it when I'm able to catch you guys in the late afternoon. You could always fill up empty space with chatter about Smudge the dog!

Also, If I were trapped underground for that long...I think I would be speechless when getting to the top, and overwhelmed by the number of people (and cameras) crowded around to see my reaction. Then once they brought my family forward, I think I would probably be crying.

Heck, I had to fight back tears while watching miner #10 hold his wife for the first time in over 2 months.

You know what would be sad? If one of these miners coming up doesn't have someone waiting for him.

Posted by Bob Collins | October 13, 2010 10:01 AM

I believe one of the miners has both a wife AND a mistress to deal with once he reaches topside.

I'm with BJ, too. Give yourself some credit, Bob! The clip you have posted here is more than seven minutes long!

I would so listen to that show on Fridays...

Srsly -- if you needed to pad it, Looch could do some Weekend Kickoff song feature at the end, and it could be Freebird on slow news weeks...
