The oil spill up close

As it usually does, the Boston Globe's Big Picture blog does a masterful job of organizing the finest images from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

One might feel somewhat guilty noting the beauty in the disaster.

This is a terrible disaster and is caught terrifically by those photographs.

I do have a question: How do oil booms work?

Shane - my understanding is that because oil floats on water, the booms act as a surface barrier that blocks the oil from advancing while allowing the water to flow however it likes underneath.
