Return of the Red Tail

As I mentioned in the Five at 8 post this morning, the red-tailed P-51 Mustang, which crashed in Red Wing, killing pilot Don Hinz years ago, returned to South St. Paul's Fleming Field today after years of restoration by the Red Tail Project. It's a traveling piece of history to educate people about the Tuskegee Airmen.

I didn't make it out to the ceremony this afternoon, but I happened to be standing by the runway Wednesday evening when it went out for its evening constitution with its hangar mate.

Nice video, but nothing can capture that rumble in your bones when one of the old warbirds flies past you.

There's nothing like a radial engine, Erik.

One of the things I like about going to Oshkosh is you'll be sitting there in the early light having your coffee when a couple of P-51s break the stillness and come racing by.

"The orthodontists are up," my camping neighbor declared after one such pass last week.

But to me it's the sound of how a war was won.

THE most awe-inspiring sound I've heard was at the Indy 500. It wasn't the cars; it was a flight of B-29's going over before the race. Erik's right - it's a rumble (not a buzz) that reverberates in your bones.

The Oshkosh rumble is truly awesome when the sky is literally filled with radial powered planes. My favorite memory though is still the flyby of a full squadron of Mustangs; the roaring v-12s are a whole 'nother animal from the rumbling radials.
