Memorial Day: A tribute to an uncle and father

Posted at 7:39 PM on May 24, 2009 by Bob Collins (2 Comments)

News Cut will present stories about those who served in whatever capacity and have died. Please send me a few paragraphs about them and, if possible, a picture and I'll be sure to add it here.

A tribute to my uncle in his home town - Leominster, MA: 2nd Lieutenant Frederick Gordon, Reported Missing in Action, while on a bombing mission over Germany on 29 Apr 1944. He served in the US Army Air Corps with the 734th Bomber Squadron, 453rd Heavy Bomber Group, flying the B-24 Liberator. He was born in Leominster and resided at 18 Morse Place. He Graduated from LHS. He is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at the American Cemetery in Cambridge, England. His remains were never recovered. He was awarded the Air medal and the Purple Heart.

And-- the WWII story of my father, Bert Fein. At 17 1/2 enlisted with the 10th Moutain division, E Company of the 86th. A Jewish boy from Brooklyn that had never been on skis joins the ski troops. Four years of tough training and a year in battle he emerges fairly unscathed with 2 Silver Stars and a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf cluster.
