Your favorite amendment

Posted at 4:39 PM on October 16, 2008 by Bob Collins (5 Comments)

What's the most important amendment to the U.S. Constitution?

In Duluth today, Todd Palin, the husband of the vice presidential candidate, told sportsmen that the 2nd Amendment "isn't just another amendment." Palin was introducing Sen. Norm Coleman at a rally.

"He stood by you. He protected your rights on land, land rights, and Second Amendment rights. It gives me great pleasure to introduce to you your United States senator; someone who has stood with hunters; with sportsmen and women; who knows that the Second Amendment isn't just another amendment. It's our right to stand up for and to protect."

Which amendments are just another amendment? Which one is your favorite? In a way, it's like being asked which of your children is your favorite.

I'll put 18 out there as 'just another amendment'. You might even argue that its the least of the amendments. But 21 - that one stands out as underappreciated.

9th and 10th are underappreciated, IMO. 17th, 22nd, 25th and 27th might be my favorites.

The missing 13th might be the most mis understood.

9th and 10th are under-understood, underappreciated, and under-obeyed.

10th SHOULD by all rights be the most important amendment in the Constitution.

The Second? Until last June, it was the most mangled by common usage.

On the other hand, the Third seems just a tad superfluous - not that I'm going to be the one pushing for repeal.

The 2nd is still my favorite because it gives teeth to congress paying at least some attention to the rest. I agree with MBerg on the 9th and 10th too.

I wonder if our President can tell us anything about the 8th amendment? What's that place in Cuba?
