As the troops redeployed from the Capitol at the end of today's official protests in St. Paul, the police marched down the protest route. My first clue that they weren't on some way to a conflagration (yet) was when they started smiling and waving to us in the world headquarters of News Cut.

I was proud to march with my fellow Veterans for Peace and the many thousands of others that were there today. I thought the Police did a fine job. I appreciate the fact that they were there, because I know we wouldn't have been allowed to march without their presence. It's can't have been an enjoyable or probably fulfilling job standing in 90 degree heat in full body-armor watching people peacefully walk by.

We were peaceful, they were professional. There were many "thank-yous" said both by us to them and by them to us as we walked. Some stated they wished they could be marching with us.

I've since learned that there was in fact a splinter group that did attack police cars and do other damage. That's unfortunate. I'm glad that these folk take the name of "Anarchist" though, and don't try to sully the name of "Peacekeeper". They have nothing to do with what we marched for today.

All that said, the break-ins and raids on protesters in the days prior to the march are shameful indeed. That kind of thuggery is not just an embarrassment to our city and state, but a dangerous and probably illegal way to go about the business of policing.
