Just tell me: Is drinking water good for me or not?
Trying to stay ahead of the health curve is never easy anymore. Some study comes out showing the health benefit of drinking water, and the next thing you know, people are plopping $3.50 down for a pint of water bottled by hand by virgins near a spring in the Alps.
It turns out, according to Stanley Goldfarb, a professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, that there's little evidence that drinking 8 glasses of water a day, does anything for you, or so his study says. He also points out there's no evidence there isn't a health benefit either.
And the whole "flushing out the toxins" thing? "I always laugh when I hear that one," says Stella Volpe, a nutritionist at the University of Pennyslvania School of Nursing. "Your kidneys do that job."
Water is so yesterday.
But the story doesn't end there. At least one natural health Web site debunked the debunking by suggesting that it's a plot by doctors to get more patients with kidney problems.
What about the trend of getting away from bottled water and going backto tap water? The $$, the enviroment and all that plastic.....
I don't think anyone really doubts that drinking water is a good thing, but everything in moderation right?
When did the whole bottled water trend begin? Speaking for myself, buying water to drink is like buying wood for your fireplace. It makes no cents at all.
I remember back in 1990 when I was in SA for Desert Shield we HAD to drink bottled water because the tap water was not potable. It seems to me that it was about in that time frame that drinking bottled water in the States became more popular. Does anyone know exactly when society became brainwashed into buying water?
The question is what we should be drinking, if not water. You have to stay hydrated somehow - and it takes liquid to flush toxins out of the kidneys, so its unclear to me what that nutritionist might be suggesting as an appropriate alternative to water. I, of course, enjoy a beer now and again, and am enjoying some coffee right now. But both those substances contain diuretics, that contribute to dehydration, so I try to drink a lot of water too, as my ancestors did, going back tens or hundreds of thousands of years.
As comical as the bottled-water craze is, I saw an ad recently for 'low-cal' water or something. Apparently people are unaware of plain old water being a no-cal substance. But when you dump all the other stuff in it, who knows what you're getting?
I don't think anyone is saying don't drink water; they're just saying don't expect much by drinking more.
Bottom line? Take a swig when you're thirsty.
