Is it because the student isn't getting sleep, or is it because the student who may not be as bright feels the need to study more?

What a dumb study. Sure, you can measure the outcome, but you can't measure the starting point. Could it be that the students who didn't pull all-nighters were better prepared to begin with, through adequate note-taking, review of material before the last minute, and having read the textbooks? This is just really Duh.
I don't think that the brightest of the bright would stay up all night. I never did!
On its surface the study may appear silly and when you go deeper it still is, unless you have been up all night.
