Thanks to Mac for so capably filling in, while I took a little respite!
This time on the USofA...I gave a salute to Woody Guthrie, who would have turned 99 this week. I played a track from that Mermaid Avenue album that Billy Bragg and the guys from Wilco made back in the 90's with some leftover Woody lyrics. We heard Pop Wagner, Tony Glover and Charlie Maguire from there new tribute to Guthrie. I also gave a spin to his son, Arlo, as he turns 64 today.
We also heard new americana from Sally Ford, John Hiatt, Amy Levere and Nick 13.

Featured a good handful of "songs for dad" on Father's Day for this episode of United States of Americana. Played songs from Simon and Garfunkel, Loretta Lynn, Waylon, Johnny Cash and others.
I also featured a brand new tune from The Jayhawks called, "She Walks In So Many Ways," from the upcoming Mockingbird Time album. An early taste! It's not due for release until September. Nice to have 'em back! It sounds like exactly what you'd want from the Jayhawks. It nice to hear thos mournful Mark & Gary harmonies again!

Dawes is back in business! Their 2nd album is called "Nothing Is Wrong." It's no sophomore slump, either. It's an album that seems like it's from another era. CSN& Y and Tom Petty come to mind, among others. The songs are expertly crafted and are full of warm harmonies. The songs seem to come straight from the heart. You can feel Taylor Goldsmith's ache on his songs of love and love gone wrong. We'll hear a couple tracks on this installment of the USofA!
Also on the docket are a a few prison songs and new music from Joe Ely, Marissa Nadler, Cody Canada and the Departed and some live Neil Young International Harvesters!

I just glanced at my playlist today and noticed an abundance of talented ladies on it! I played tunes from a new group called Mount Moriah. They hail from North Carolina and feature a really great singer named Heather McEntire, who sounds an awful lot like Dolly Parton, who we also heard, as well as Sharon Van Etten, and I played that eerie cover of a Radiohead track by Sarah Jarosz.

This time I featured a couple from Lucinda Williams, including the title track from her latest. "Blessed," a thoughtful tune with a very majestic jam at the end which juxtaposed nicely into Wilco's "Impossible Germany." Lucinda performs in Rochester at the Mayo Civic Center Presentation Hall on Wednesday.
Walleye is on my mind! I featured a few tunes for the fishing opener this weekend. I also gave a spin to Roger McGuinn. He plays this week at the Hopkins Center For the Arts on Tuesday.
We also heard new music from Eric Hanke, Vandaveer and my band of the moment, Mount Moriah.

BTW: The Preservation Hall Jazz band perform at the Guthrie on March 14th!

One of my heroes, Johnny Cash, would have turned 79 yesterday. We lost Johnny in 2003. If you are a Cash collector, like myself, you may be interested in, From Memphis to Hollywoood: Bootleg Volume II. The CD was released last Tuesday and features 57 previously unreleased and hard to find tracks, including 16 never before released recordings. A must for Cash completists! I opened the show with Johnny's first ever radio appearance in his adopted hometown of Memphis, TN!
It's a big concert week! I featured many of the artists who'll be in our neighborhood in the days to come, including Merle Haggard and Khris Kristofferson, who are at Mystic Lake tonight. I gave a spin to Jamey Johnson, who's playing a benefit tonight for Jared Allen's Wounded Warriors charity. I also played new tracks from Middle Brother, Lynn Miles, and The Yellowbirds.

Got a brand new CD in the mail from our old friends from the veteran Chapel Hill, NC band, Southern Culture On The Skids. Bandleader Rick Miller describes the new Kudzu Ranch album like this: "The Kudzu Ranch is collection of 10 originals and a couple covers," Rick says, "songs about people, places and things -- like good friends and crazy neighbors, dry dirt and pompadoured flirts, busy roads and horny toads -- all of them motivatin', salivatin' and procreatin' to their own crazy beat!" - just what you'd want from 'em! I featured a track called, "Highlife" on the latest USofA.
I also played music from John Mellencamp, who has a couple shows this week at the Orpheum in Minneapolis, and I played another track from The Guitar Song album from Jamey Johnson.

This time on United States of Americana...I featured special 'in-studio' guests The Secret Sisters. The band dropped by this past Wednesday while in the midst of a promotional tour for their debut album, which drops in early October. They are indeed sisters from Mussel Shoals, Alabama. Their music is rich in close harmonies which remind me of both The Everly Brothers and the Andrew Sisters. T-Bone Burnette serves as executive producer on the duo's self-titled album. The Secret Sisters also have a 7" single produced by Jack White, who also added his guitar prowess.
