Chart Show 7-7

Brand new #1 bouyed by the offer of tickets to the sold out Fleet Foxes show.
Their "Hopelessness Blues" spent two weeks at the top. Big leaps too for
Adele, Atmosphere and The Strokes, and a big influx of new stuff including
Radiohead after a two week break.
It's the first time we've had two female artists who both have three names and a
UK band who have an Australian name!
Danger Mouse and Danielle Luppi are inducted into the Hall of Fame, we lost
Tapes 'n Tapes after 6 weeks, Arctic Monkeys and Booker T after only one.
We will be talking about this chart and the national sales charts on the new
Musicheads as part of our revamped 10pm programming next week.
Thanks for listening!

Congrats to Bon Iver for making it to our #1 and #2 on Billboard's sales chart!
Arcade Fire drop from the top after two weeks as they play their biggest ever
UK show to 60,000 peeps in London's Hyde Park  this weekend.
Iron And Wine get inducted for the second time and making her debut in the
Hall Of Fame, Lykke Li JUST manages to hold on. We lost Beastie Boys after
8 weeks and Rogue Valley after only one.
Booker gets a nice little boost from his RTG performance and the power of the
CD of The Week stokes the Arctic Monkeys into the chart for the first time.
I'll have a pint of Dandelion and Burdock to celebrate!  Try to stay cool and...
Happy Fourth!!

With all the ticket fever today and CD of the Week status it's surprising that
Bon Iver was held out of the top spot. Arcade Fire are still formidable foes!
Big boosts for MMJ and TnT with RTG fever and nice that Rogue Valley one of
The Local Music Exchange bands got a push. Any of the Seattle bands that
YOU think should be added to our list?

Our friends at NPR just did a poll for the best release of the first half of the year.
The Decemberists won. They'd be in our Top 5, judging by the votes here.
#2 Fleet Foxes, #3 Adele, #4 Bon Iver and FTP, ONLY #47 on their list would too.
Radiohead made it to #5 on NPR but they've dropped off ours this week after only
ONE week for the second song from 'King Of Limbs' so I would ask, do fans of
Radiohead really think this is a good album or what?! Discuss.
Two Door Cinema Club and Lupe Fiasco also dropped off this week

Titanic battle for the top spot this week with lots of the big names surging, but
Arcade Fire came out on top getting a lift from the fans wanting tix to RTG.
MMJ are the highest new entry, and a lot of their fans voted for Arcade Fire and
The Joy Formidable, another hooj guitar sound coming in at #12.

Atmosphere's 2nd induction is the 8th overall local entry this year for the Chart
Hall of Fame. There's been 23 inductees so far this year, almost exactly half
2010's total of 47. We're close to the halfway point of the year, that's really a
CRAZY stat!?!

Sad, The Cars dropped out after 2 weeks with "Sad Song" and after 8 weeks
Low's "Try To Sleep" was sent to 'sleep with the fishes'.

FTP get inducted into the Chart Hall of Fame returning to the top and holds off
Bon Iver who seem to destined to take over, as Adele joins the HOF too.
Iron & Wine got a nice boost from their tickets being given away, one of many
SOLD OUT shows that we're having this year for lots of the bands that chart.

We lost all the bands with 'and the' in their name, Florence and Fitz. Debuts by
Two Harbors and The RAA make it a strong week to have a place in your name.
Second visit to the chart for DeVotchka, bouyed by their Sound Town date?

Daniele Luppi and Fitz and the Tantrums were all big movers up the chart.
Lupe and The Head and the Heart nice surprise new entries, sadly we lost

Finally, while all the big name bands bounce up and down the chart, after
4 weeks at # 2 Foster The People make it to the top! It's Adele's Birthday,
(22 I presume?) but she didn't make it back to #1, to celebrate.
Giving tickets away helped Cake to their highest position yet so they and
Fleet Foxes are poised and Rural and Dessa are inducted this week to The
Chart Hall of Fame.

Some big names make their debut mid-table so it looks like a big fight for
#1 next week OR will Foster hold on, now they're there? But then TVOTR &
Radiohead have under-performed and this week we lost, surprisingly, The
Kills, Bright Eyes and The Strokes. So anything can happen, it's up to you!

Adele does her yoyo thing again, back to the top after a two week slump.
Jeremy is inducted for the 3rd time, fitting after his spectacular show at
The Fitz which you can hear archived, let's make that an annual event!
Especially sad to see TVOTR take a tumble after the passing of bass player
Gerard forced them to cancel their two sold out First Ave shows.
We lost Idle Hands after a good 6 week run and Fitz and the Tantrums after
9 weeks on the the chart.

Listeners have shaken up the chart this week with some exciting new entries and a strong chart debut from an artist recently in our UBS Forum. Standing at the top of the chart is Fleet Foxes with the #1, and Foster the People with the #2 spots this week. Five local artists/bands made the chart as the station launches Local Current, an all Minnesota music stream. Jeremy Messersmith moves up to the #6 spot for his 11th week on the chart. Will he make the HOF next week? Dessa stays on the chart for a 9th week with her song "Alibi," and at the bottom of the chart is the Idle Hands, Atmosphere, and a new entry by Low. Other new entries this week include Florence and the Machine and Jessica Lea Mayfield at the #13 and #14 spots. Plus, a strong debut from Iron and Wine following Sam Beam's visit to the The Current/UBS Forum this week.

Rumor has it has had it! At the top that is, Adele has been known as a
Yoyo artist and Radiohead are doing the same thing, falling again this week.
Other wise a stable chart with no new entries and just one inductee to the
HOF; Cloud Cult. Lots of locals moving down, including our next CD of the
Week Atmosphere's 'Family Sign' released next week. Rural Alberta call the
Twin Cities their second home, they got a big boost back up, as did PB&J.

Foster the People have been able to foster many people as fans here!
Big move up to #2 and playing a sold out show Friday at The 7th St. Entry.
Radiohead rebound on the strength of delivering the news. Lucky to be in
Uptown this Tuesday at 1pm I snatched a copy of their 'newspaper'  The
Universal Sigh. Judging by the poems, lyrics and short stories in the paper
'The King Of Limbs' is based around trees (the limbs being branches) which
I'd not thought of before, cool stuff.

Dessa got a bump up again perhaps from her cool TPT TV performance at
The Cedar Cultural Center for the show MN Original. She'll be bouncing to
Rochester Art Center with us Saturday for The Current Road Trip, doors at
6.30pm and we're getting indications that it will 'sell out' so get there early!

Decemberists drop off after only one week. Big jumps for Atmosphere and
Foster The People, just in time for their gig next Friday (4/1) in the Entry.

Most new entries for...a long long time! Making room for all of them, we lost

Lucinda WIlliams after a couple of weeks, Communist Daughter's cover of

The Beatles after 8 weeks. Cee Lo, Rogue Valley and after a single week

DeVotchka suffered a massive drop off in support. The biggest movers are

Fleet Foxes!

The most new entries for a long time with four, including some big names;
Radiohead, The Strokes and DeVotchka all making their debuts, as The
Chart Show has only been going for 14 months. Aided by 2 Hall Of Fame
Inductees last week and Florence's Oscar buzz lasting only one week!
Kanye and Bon dropped out too after 5 weeks. We have another Inductee;
Sufjan Stevens' "I Walked". Nice to see the RAA getting a lot of love here.
Perhaps the tickets to the show helped them, but what's with DBT?
Were they on the telly?! The Ch9 profile last week seemed to help Dessa!

Two big inductees to The Chart Hall of Fame, Atmosphere and Arcade Fire.
The whole of the HOF is posted below, after several requests. Now will
Sufjan hang on next week?!?! Big moves this week by Cage The Elephant,
Drive-By Truckers and Florence slamming in at #10. Most female acts ever!
Would have been more but Adele was inducted last week. We also lost
Bright Eyes after only one week, but I'm sure they'll be back. Cheers!

Adele is inducted into the Chart Show Hall of Fame this week with her song "Rolling In The Deep."  She just broke a Beatles record in the UK, two albums in the Top 5 together! '19' her previous album came back into the charts at #4 while this new one '21' is at the top.

Big moves up the chart for Kanye West, and Dessa.  We have 3 new entries crowding the bottom of the chart, and Fitz and the Tantrums' "MoneyGrabber" re-enters at #14.  We lost Girl Talk after 7 weeks on the chart.

We can only hope that the news that you shot to #1 might positively impact
Craig of Cloud Cult's health as he deals with an ailment of the heart, wow!
The Decemberists were tough to keep down too, they had the #1 selling
Billboard Chart Album, selling five times as well as the best week for their
'Hazards of Love'. Adele's a yo-yo, bouncing up and down alternate weeks.
In the UK her album sold more than the rest of the Top 10 ...combined!
Another strong local week, 'The MN Beatle Project' keeps bringing the hits!

This week Pert Near Sandstone reclaims the #1 spot on the Chart bumping The Decemberists to #2.  Two big debuts for local music this week with Communist Daughter's cover of The Beatles "Golden Slumbers," and Cloud Cult's "There's So Much Energy In Us."  Neil Young also debuted this week nudging LCD Soundsystem off the Chart.  We also lost Kanye West after a 4 week run with "Runaway." And last but certainly not least! This week we induct two more songs into the Chart Show Hall of Fame.  The Black Keys add another track from the album Brothers with "Sinister Kid," and Matt and Kim make the HOF with "Cameras."

Brand New Year, brand new number one! Celebrating their victory at the top of our
2010 poll for album of the year, it's the 4th Mumford and Sons song to hit the top.
The National are the first band to be inducted into the Hall of Fame for 2011.
Big moves for Adele and Tapes 'n Tapes and steady progress for Kanye from the
#1 Album of 2010 as picked by a majority of the other critics in the country.
The highest new entry might never be a 'real record' but I've definitely gotten more
Girl Talk requests and enquiries than for any other 'song' recently.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, it's going to be a really great one, I promise!

It's the final Chart Show of the year as we take a break next week to replay the
Current Classic Concerts of 2010 series and to concentrate on the Top 89.
Considering that, I hereby declare Jeremy donating his organ inducted into the
HOF and everyone else will get a week added to their tally.
Unfortunately that will not help Ben Folds and Nick Hornby who dropped out after
11 weeks, nor Ray LaMontagne after 9 weeks with "Repo Man".
We break last weeks record of local entries by getting a half from the Low cover by
Robert Plant, that makes 81/2 the record now.

The first full year of The Chart Show is at a close and it's been a great one!
A full list of The Chart Show Hall of Fame is below, 44 songs in all, wow!
Can I be the first to say...Happy New Year!

Another record breaking week for local artists to get on the chart with EIGHT!
We lost Lissie and three HoF inductees from last week and the highest new entry
Sufjan Stevens proves our theory that this new album is a slow burner.
SPIN magazine's number one single of the year from Cee Lo is inducted this week.

We continue to celebrate The Beatles at the top of a very consistant chart this week.
There will be big changes next week though with three Hall of Fame inductees.
LCD and Arcade Fire both for the second time and a debut for Atmosphere.
Lost Belle and Sebastian after 6 weeks and gained Adele with a very swift new entry.

A massive surprise new entry at #1 which has never happened before, in fact has
"I Am The Walrus" ever been number one anywhere for anything before?!?!
The wonderful power of The Beatles, we even had a vote from Suriname?!?
With Mason brand new too from our CD of The Week next week it is the
best showing for local bands ever, with 7 and best showing for the word AND
which if you count the 'n, appears in 5 band names!
We lost Old 97's, Cake, John Legend w/The Roots and Cold War Kids.
No inductees this week but look for big changes next week with 3 songs poised.

Catch Pert Near Sandstone this week on the Local Show Sunday at 6pm.
AND an updated Hall of Fame is printed below, some help for your Top 89 votes!

Thanks to everyone who took time to vote in this short week, only a few votes short.
Sufjan Stevens "Heirloom" dropped out after 9 weeks but it should be replaced by
"I Walked" as support for his new album grows. Jenny and Johnny slipped off too.
Great to see both Tapes 'n Tapes and The Decemberists have high new entries.
It's their first time on as we didn't have the show when they had their big success in
The Top 89.  I wonder how different those votes will be from the weekly poll?
We'll have the ballot ready for you next week...HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Sorry it's late, so much craziness last night with the Fund Drive ending right in mid
Chart Show countdown, amazing end to a record breaking Member Drive.
Thanks to EVERYONE who supported us!!

Three more inductees into The Chart Hall Of Fame this week with Trampled By
Turtles going out with a bang returning to the top spot. The Avett Brothers have
3 now which is the record shared with Mumfords and The XX. Good week for
Gorillaz to debut in The Hall, our guests at 7pm on Friday.

Spoon and Kings Of Leon make a return after dropping off last week and nice for
Roma Di Luna to get a high new entry with the ballot swollen by the demand for
Mumford tix! We lost Ra Ra Riot and Jenny and Johnny after only one week each.
Sleigh Bells plummet just as they were due to be inducted!

This week on THE CHART SHOW...

It's musical chairs for the 1,2, and 3 spots with Arcade Fire back on top.  Ray LaMontagne's "Beg Steal or Borrow" is inducted into the HOF, and Sufjan Stevens made a huge jump up to #5.  We lost Of Montreal, Rogue Valley, and Lissie from the rankings, and it's no surprise that voters added "Don't Call Them Twinkies" to the chart, as the TWINS enter the postseason.

The dancey vote dissipated, we lost...Janelle Monae, Prince and Mark Ronson.

Massive overall of the chart this week, biggest in many months as we lose HOF
Florence from last week and Michael Franti who was on the verge of being inducted,
Band of Horses, again, The New Pornographers, Lindstrom and Christabelle, Devo &
M.I.A. from #9?!?!

Janelle Monae was the highest new entry and Of Montreal just missed the Top 20.
There's huge interest in the show that they are playing together on Sept 23rd at
First Avenue and next week we'll give you a chance to win tickets to that show.

Arcade Fire are inducted into the Hall of Fame this week and by popular demand
the next song on the poll is ..."Ready To Start". The album kicks off with a great
1-2 punch and just keeps getting better with multiple listens. Check out what we
Musicheads thought about it on this week's show.

Perhaps Arcade Fire will not be inducted into the Hall of Fame next week riding high at
#1 ? Do you love the new album as much as I do? Listen to next week's Musicheads!
Which song should we put on the voting list next?

Florence has quietly gotten herself inducted this week, seems like that song has
only been a hit here at The Current, or am I missing something?
We lost Broken Bells and MGMT again, but we gained John Prine via the Avett Bros.

M.I.A. Sleigh Bells and Ray La are the biggest movers, and we have two sets of
Eyes and Love (sick and terrible) twice in the titles of songs.

Another massive turnout this week, even during the dog days!  Thanks for voting!!

The Mumfords have been Trampled by Turtles again! That makes 3 weeks at #1.
In the next two weeks we'll have a large change over as 6 songs are destined for the
Chart Hall of Fame, if they manage to hang in there.
We lost Broken Bells with a massive evaporation of support, dropping out from #4!
LCD slip out with 'Drunk Girls' but a write-in vote is building for 'Dance Yrself Clean'.

Thanks to Mac 'Attack' Wilson for filling in so ably on the show this week...cheers.

GO TEAM USA!!!

The New Pornographers get inducted into the Hall of Fame.

We lost She & Him from last week.

After analysing the voting this week it's clear that M&S fans have not been voting
for both of the songs on the chart, they choose one or the other but rarely both.
'The Cave jumped out with a big lead this week, which explains the big cheer at
The Varsity's sweltering hot show Tuesday!
Big moves from Phantogram and the Black Keys, who got to #3 in the top ten of the
Billboard Chart too with big first week sales. Another strong week for the locals.
Dropping out ... The Dead Weather, Gogol, Jonsi and Cold War Kids (that's twice!)

Brand new #1 bouyed by the ticket giveaway we have to assume, but they did well
to hold off the dual Mumford threat and the terrific debut by Cloud Cult!!
Dessa descends after 2 weeks at the top but does go into The Chart Hall of Fame,
along with Broken Bells who just hung on to make it in. Unfortunately Dawes with
'That Western Skyline' failed to stay in for the extra week to get inducted, their
new entry was a massive write in last week so it had to go on the ballot and might
have taken away from the other song...who's time has NOT come!

The other losers this week were;
Rogue Valley, and Sharon Jones after only one week and Peter Gabriel after 8.

Two more inductees to the Hall of Fame;
Mumford & Sons going out on top and The XX finishing strong at #2 adding to
"Crystalised" which is already inducted they become the first artist to have two
Hall of Fame songs.
A nice bump up the charts for Dessa welcoming her back to town after touring with
P.O.S which was not a surprise as I just started getting calls about that song!
Nice jump for Hockey too, Beach House are back and the highest new entry is
The New Pornographers.

Great Global Shout Out this week...  As they wait for the birth of their daughter

Thanks heaps for listening!!

Five local entries this week, if we count RGC. That's the best showing so far.
But a return to the top spot for the buzz loaded Brits and some big jumps for
Johnny Cash, Dawes, Vampire Weekend and Peter Gabriel.

A local Number One!!!
Two more inductees to the Chart Hall of Fame, both ending their runs with nice
bounces up the chart...The Avett Brothers' "Kick Drum Heart" and Spoon!!

We lost Jay Farrar & Ben Gibbard, Dessa, Eels, Brandi Carlile and Hot Chip.
But it's not a bad week when you replace them with a couple of legends;
Peter Gabriel and Johnny Cash; a couple of hot young things, Yeasayer and
Fanfarlo; and the song that should've been an Oscar nominee from 'Up In The Air',
Sad Brad Smith's "Help Yourself" a new anthem for our Member drives?!

This is the most stable chart we have ever seen! No new entries.
Just one re-entry for Broken Bells and another new Number One!
It's Hall of Fame induction time again for Yeasayer's "Ambling Alp".
Two more are poised to join them in the next two weeks which will
happen if it stays as stable as this. It's great to see your support
through a voting process mirror the behaviour of sales charts.
It would still be nice to have more votes each week so...
make sure you vote evey week and tellya friends! Cheers.

SORRY!!! To all the Vampire Weekend fans who voted for Horchata,

it would still be on the chart but should not have been on the ballot.

It's now in the Chart Hall of Fame after being on the chart for 12 weeks.

Solace can be taken by those fans with the news that the album went straight to

Number One on Billboard's sales chart this week, that's hooj!!

Congrats also to local band Arms Akimbo.

Out of nowhere they stormed on to the chart for the first time

along with five other new entries and two big re-entries.

This week it's another fresh chart with 6 new entries! The highest is a real slow burner that sounds like a classic from Jack Penate. The largest jump up the charts might make Julian change his mind, but his band The Strokes have just announced a string of festival dates for next year. The XX were in town this week and did a cool session for us. That might have fuelled their big jump too, I got lots of positive reviews of their sold out show. And if we can still claim Har Mar as ours, four local artists is the largest number ever! What a year it's been!

Perhaps giving tickets away for their sold out show helped them this week?

Congrats to the brand new #2 who played in town this week supporting Brendon Benson and reports suggested a storming show.

The Chart Show will be on Wednesday at 8pm next week because of Thanksgiving and you'll get a chance to win tickets to see The Swell Season Dec 5th at The State Theater.

The Number One remains the same for the fourth week and again it's winning by a large margin.  Their show at The Varsity sold out weeks ago, but we'll be giving away tix on air all week and to one lucky winner who votes for The Chart.

Congrats to Ryan from Inver Grove Heights who is going to Dinosaur Jr. next week.

Another first this week, Mason Jennings is the first artist to have two songs on the chart at the same time! Don't forget you can write in a song if you think we have missed something, that's another way we're getting your feedback through this show. Three weeks ago we had so many write in votes for Edward Sharpe that we added it to the list and look where it is this week! What a wonderful surprise to see such a new young band top a chart filled with 'veterans'! They will be at The Varsity Nov 29th.

AND thanks for all the support during the first day of our Member Drive, we had a ton of people joining during the show which is great too, when you join tell us that you like the chart show, we don't you're out there until you make the call...

CONGRATS to Madelaine of Minneapolis she's going to see Bob Mould next Tuesday.
THANKS to Dana from Woodbury for writing a long letter, the old fashioned way to say how much he liked the Chart Show idea, and that he thought I looked like Robert Smith or Edward Scissorhands when he first listened to me! You can send your Global Shout Out via email mwheat@mpr.org anytime of the week and then listen around 8.30 on the night that we run down the Top 20.

Lots of movement on the chart this week and a new layout...what'yathink?
The LW is Last Week's position and TW this week and WKS the number of weeks spent on the chart...and another brand new Number One! I wonder who will be the first to retain that spot?
