Transmission Video of the Day - A new wave/goth dance club from 1984

Nick Cave once said "Release the Bats" ... indeed you'll hear that in this 2+ hour video of a filmed English dance club in 1984.

Since I play 90% of the tunes you hear in the film, I guess it's obvious where many of Transmission's influences come from.

So happy World Goth Day and enjoy the flick. Maybe we can learn a new dance move or two.

* If you want to skip the interesting...some might call "cheesy" intro complete with a Muzak version of John Lennon's "Woman", go straight to the 10 minute mark as the kids begin to enter to New Order's "Blue Monday".

Back in February I hosted a couple shows on French pop and played the tune "Zou Bisou Bisou" by Ms. Gillian Hills...a song I've been putting on mix tapes since high school (thanks to a high school sweetheart)

Listen to one of the shows here: http://minnesota.publicradio.org/collections/special/columns/music_blog/archive/2012/02/transmission_22.shtml

Almost two months later (this past Sunday) I hosted a Mad Men premier party at Jax Cafe in NE Mpls. Guess which song appeared in a fantastic scene where Don Draper's wife Megan serenaded Don with this song?

Guess who was the awkward one in the sold-out audience of 260 people to throw his hands in the air and applaud her performance?

Got to love that French pop.

I'm not sure how this song came up last night in the studio while hosting a program about power pop, but it did. Both David Campbell and I agree that it's one of the best intros to any song.

Ahh, I remember now...we were saying that same thing about the Plimsouls power pop classic "A Million Miles Away". That too has a timeless intro that just hits you right from the moment it starts.

Moving on to solos. Nice, brief, clean, not the over-done look-at-me-shred-it-up-solo...this TFF's tune also sports one of my favorite solos from the 80's.

Can we just agree to call this a perfect pop song already?

Have a great weekend!

On that note, I've dove head first into the loads of Australian artists that are camped out in my collection. Many of which will be played this Friday night at First Avenue during Transmission's 11th anniversary bash.

Cut Copy, The Presets, Empire of the Sun...so much great material!

Those three gents will be playing a set at Nick & Eddie tomorrow night and I'll be filling in the cracks with some high energy tunes. I'll get a nice round in tonight on the show to kick things off.

This is the song that did it for me.

I was in grade school in the middle of a massive Beatles phase and heard this song for the first time on the "oldies" station. With it's rich harmonies and melody I was instantly hooked. This band that my music obsessed aunt always talked about finally "hit me".

It was Monkey Mania from there on out.

Duran Duran, The Human League, ABC, Spandau Ballet and loads of others took full advantage of this new promotional tool and rode that second wave right into our living rooms across America. Don't let the haircuts fool you, there were a lot of great pop songs behind all that make-up and synthesizer.

- Obvious reason: It'll soon be Friday night
- Less obvious reason: I dig the Thin Lizzy sounding guitar solo
- A bit more obvious: Just hosted last night's Transmission tribute to Glam rock, and Glam is in the air
- Reason for those in the know: The Darkness will be rocking First Avenue this coming Sunday
- Ideal reason: Friday needs to be taken back from Rebecca Black

I'm done now.

All you need to know about tonight's Bowie in Berlin tribute can be summed up via the first few lines on Wiki:

The Berlin Trilogy is a series of David Bowie albums recorded in collaboration with Brian Eno in the 1970s. The three albums are Low, "Heroes" and Lodger.

They became known as the Berlin Trilogy because Bowie was living in West Berlin at the time of their inception, at least part of them was recorded there, and they were influenced by the new music from Germany that was popular at that time; most notably, the sound of electronic pop pioneers Kraftwerk (who, in the song "Trans-Europe Express", mention the lyrics "From station to station / back to Düsseldorf City / Meet Iggy Pop and David Bowie" as a nod to the two artists' work in Berlin). The albums are experimental and rank among the most highly-regarded in the Bowie catalogue. Among the later styles influenced by the albums were New Wave, post-punk and industrial.

Ms. Keenan died of pneumonia on January 14th, 2011 at the age of 42. She was one of the rare deaths from contracting the "swine flu" virus in 2010 while on tour in Australia.

Broadcast was the band that I had seen most in my life, and it was love at first listen since playing their debut EP on my college radio program back in 1996. Tonight is the least that I could do to properly pay tribute to the woman who brought me so much enjoyment through her art.

Transmission's Local Release of the Year - The Rope / self titled EP

Posted at 10:52 AM on January 3, 2012 by Jake Rudh
Filed under: Transmission

On Friday, I compiled Transmission's top 75 tracks of 2011 which you can find out here at www.thecurrent.org.

There were loads of fantastic recordings made in the Twin Cities last year, and I might compile a handful of my favorites down the road, but today I bring to you my top local release of 2011.

The Rope will be heading into the studio next month to record their first proper full-lenth which is sure to catch the ears of music lovers world-wide.

Until the time of its release comes, we have their most impressive 6 song debut EP...my choice as the top release of 2011.

Sure, it makes sense that I would be a fan of a band that states "playing an atmospheric yet driving style of music influenced by some of the darker post-punk bands of the late 70s and early 80s" on their bio. I dig The Rope because they go beyond mere comparisons to Joy Division, The Cure and The Psychedelic Furs, they add to their love and influences and create their own art.

When you listen to the skillfully mixed & produced recording and especially when you see them play live, you can easily feel that they believe in what they do and want you to as well. The passion delivered through their music is genuine and far from derivative...something not seen in many of the "80's influenced" acts in music today.

While seeing the band live, I've heard a handful of the songs not on their current EP that will be included on their upcoming full-length release. You can add The Rope along side of Air, Grizzly Bear, Morrissey, The Walkmen, Magnetic Fields, The XX and others as my most anticipated albums of 2012!

Transmission's Top 75 Tracks of 2011

Posted at 6:06 PM on December 30, 2011 by Jake Rudh
Filed under: Transmission

Thanks for clicking on to check out Transmission's top 75 tracks of 2011. Enjoy your stay.

There is no order to this and the descriptions will be short. You may not agree with the brief descriptions or think they're too simple, but remember folks with varying musical backgrounds are looking at this. If you dig what Transmission is based on (new wave/post-punk/synth-pop/electro/glam/garage/Brit-pop/60's/mod/etc)...add to it ambient, experimental and chill-wave, then I think you'll dig some if not most of these tracks.

Enjoy!

* There are loads more, but I can only put three hours into this. The list doesn't include the many fantastic local acts who put out some outstanding numbers this year. I might compile those next.

** You can hear many of these and more on my weekly radio program (Transmission / Thursday nights / 10pm / The Current) --> http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/programs/transmission/

Transmission Video of the Day - Chapel Club "All the Eastern Girls"

We have to go way back to January and the start to 2011, but one of the best albums all the way through from start to finish is Chapel Club's "Palace".

They played a fantastic set at the 7th St. Entry back in March and it instantly made me a believer.

Hoping that in 2012 these London lads can create a worldwide buzz...the kind that they deserve.

Transmission Single of the Year - Metronomy "The Look"

Posted at 1:07 PM on December 22, 2011 by Jake Rudh
Filed under: Transmission

Tonight and next Thursday at 10pm Transmission will be playing a handful of the songs that made the dance floor buzz, car drive just a bit faster and the iPod stay on repeat.

There will be a master list posted at the end of the year (in a week), but for now I welcome you to tune in and enjoy the impressive amounts of fantastic music that was created in 2011.

As for "The Look" by Metronomy being Transmission's "Single of the Year"...it earned it. The song has barely received any radio play in the states, but I can play this track now between a New Order and a Cut Copy song and it'll keep the floor packed. It holds down just the right amount of synth-pop, Brit-pop & new wave characteristics that make it uniquely a Transmission favorite.

If you dig it, I recommend picking up their 2011 release "The English Riviera".

Looking forward to bringing you tonight's show!

Transmission Video of the Day - Billy Bragg "A New England"

Posted at 11:12 AM on December 20, 2011 by Jake Rudh
Filed under: Transmission

I had been a moderate fan of Mr. Bragg's up until I saw him at First Avenue back in 1996 with Robyn Hitchcock. That's when I officially became a fan...of both genius artists.

Taking a moment to say happy b-day to a man not afraid to stand up for what he believes.

I especially like this version as he dedicates it to the beautiful Kirsty MacColl, who left us far too soon.

Transmission Video of the Day - Summer Camp "Better Off Without You"

This and next Thursday, I'll try to break down the hundreds of new tunes that were presented to me via record labels, friends, blogs, etc and bring you the best of 2011 Transmission style.

If you're into the new wave, post-punk, synth, shoegaze and experimental pop that the night is built on, you're probably going to dig many of these young artists still carrying on the torch today.

As for this Summer Camp tune, how could I not like a track that sounds like late 70's Blondie?

Transmission Video of the Day - The Dave Brubeck Quartet "Take Five"

Posted at 10:33 AM on December 6, 2011 by Jake Rudh

Mr. David Brubeck was born today 91 years ago. His iconic "Take Five" album was in my house growing up, and as a little lad I had always been drawn to it...from the cover art, to the oddly, happy sounds that came from it.

It wasn't until late high school that I actually really *started* to listen to the album and go beyond it...way beyond it. (I'm pretty sure I own everything Brubeck has recorded).

His talent and trailblazing style has been a massive influence not only in the world of jazz, but all music.

That's exactly why The Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Take Five" is the T.V.O.D.

Who cares if you have to record over last week's "21 Jump Street", they're debuting new videos by the Breeders, XTC, Morrissey, Jesus & Mary Chain & Ride!

Or better yet, tune into 89.3 The Current tonight at 10pm as Transmission pays tribute to this influential show. Bonus points: The host is nowhere near as annoying as that Kennedy lady.

No, it wasn't the summer of 1978 or 1984 ... it was 2011, and The Cars came to the Twin Cities. We're not just talking Ric and a crew of dudes we didn't know (hi Axl), we're talking all of the original members (minus the coolest of the cool Ben Orr / r.i.p.)

For a guy who hosts a show like Transmission, this was a big deal. It was a huge deal to the many who helped sell out First Avenue that night as well.

We were a pack of fans that sang along with every word and some of us with good knees actually pogo'd Ramones style...and this magnificent track was the last song of the night in their encore.

It was just what we needed.

With Ray Davies and The 88 coming to the Fitz on November 8th & a 60's British Invasion tribute taking place at Kings Wine Bar on November 1st, I've decided that next Thursday's Transmission will be nothing but an hour of the artists that hit the states for the first time back in the early to mid 60's.

It might not by the music of your generation, but shine up your Beatle Boots and comb your mop tops as the British are coming!

It's the annual pre-Halloween all goth & industrial Transmission tonight at Club Jager (North Loop of DT MPLS). If it's anything like the last few years, 70% show up in costume and capacity is hit.

For that reason we're starting an hour early at 9pm.

This Thursday, Transmission brings you Part II of the all dark program. We'll be live in the studio at 10pm and I may or may not be wearing "guyliner"

Generally I would be posting videos leading up to this Thursday's theme (goth/dark music), but I saw Bryan Ferry this past weekend, and haven't stopped listening to both Roxy Music and Bryan's solo material since.

Similar to Bowie, Kraftwerk, Costello, The Beatles, Zombies, and many other iconic acts, I go through phases of zeroing in on only their bodies of work and staying there for a week or two. I'm proud to once again be caught up in "Ferryland".

If you've ever wondered whether or not Mr. Ferry still has "got it" now in his mid 60's, the simple answer is yes.

With that said, here is one of the anthems of the time. It received heavy rotation on MTV's 120 Minutes back in the day, and made Catherine Wheel a somewhat known name in the pre-generic 90's alternative music days.

You'll hear CW on tomorrow night's program, but it won't be this song. It's better! (at least in my opinion).

It's getting harder to say the words "She or he are the real deal" in this world of pop/gloss, but those words ring out easily in Ms. Clark's case.

Tune in next Thursday, August 18th for an entire Transmission program filled with the best tunes from 80's flicks.

Until then , have a great weekend!

Transmission video of the day - Duran Duran "Planet Earth"

We're going deep with Duran Duran from their 1981 debut release tonight on Radio Transmission. If they had a video for the track I'll be playing, I would have posted a spoiler song for tonight's Radio Transmission (10pm), but we'll have to make do with one of the two singles which were released off their New Romantic, self-titled classic.

Duran Duran were overlooked as a "serious" band by many music critics back in the 80's because of their pretty-boy looks and Beatle-like reaction they had on their fans around the world. That has changed in the past decade and some of our favorite bands which we play on The Current now cite Duran as one of their major influences. Funny how that works isn't it?

With the unrest in London and beyond currently, a few friends living in the UK requested that I play and post this specific song tonight. My thoughts are with them all as they deal with the unfortunate circumstances occurring in their country.

"Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again?"

Transmission video of the day - B-52's "Rock Lobster"

A huge thanks to all who made it out to First Avenue last Friday night for Transmission Presents: "Friday Night Videos". I can't really think of much else to say than that it was a complete and utter blast!

Throughout the six hours, we played loads of videos that kept the dance floor jumping, but once the floor got rocked lobster style with this vid and much better audio, it seemed all 1,000+ of the folks screamed and went instantly wild. A definite "you had to be there moment."

It won't be a room like First Ave, but we might have to do an encore presentation at Transmission's regular Wednesday night home - Clubhouse Jager this week!

Mr. Ocasek's correct. You are all I've got tonight. You're filling the First Avenue dance floor, you're providing the vibe, the atmosphere and the great time. I'll provide the the soundtrack, you provide the moves!

* Doors & music/videos begin right at 8pm and we take the party all the way to 2am!

(if you're a fellow music-head and want to see the more obscure videos/hear the deeper tracks ... the 8 -10pm hours have your name on them)

Transmission video of the day - The Kinks "Come Dancing"

With the recent celebration of MTV's 30th year, the music videos of the late 1970's and early to mid 80's are in fashion again. Who needs big budget videos that took millions of dollars to make anyway?

On that note, tomorrow night at First Ave, Transmission celebrates "Friday Night Videos" ... a night filled with these low-budget videos sporting sci-fi scenes, artists playing to "fake" audiences, and bands walking through deserts playing flutes in trees.

It's time to turn back the clock, break out our best Belinda Carlisle/Simon LeBon moves and come dancing!

To many (including me), it doesn't get much more feel-good than a pop tune packed with melody, harmony, hooks & simple, unforgettable guitar riffs

The Night is called "Starry Eyes a Night of Power Pop" after the classic single from The Records. Tonight at Kings Wine Bar, we'll be giving away multiple tickets for this Friday's Transmission at First Avenue while listening to goose bump causing tracks from such artists as:

We received so much positive response from playing the Ocean Blue's "Ballerina Out of Control" on last night's show, I thought posting a tune off their self-titled debut album would be appropriate for today.

I was introduced to this fantastic band through MTV's 120 Minutes, and they sound just as fresh today as they did 20 years ago.

p.s. That gent on the far left of the pic is local boy Peter Anderson (drums)

Have a fantastic weekend folks.

Transmission video of the day - Pulp "Do You Remember the First Time"

Posted at 12:26 PM on July 27, 2011 by Jake Rudh
Filed under: Transmission

You'll hear on this Thursday's Radio Transmission that the show will have a little different "feel" than the first two. I did this purposely.

As many of the weekly club-goers know, Transmission is much more than just a new wave/synth-pop night. Don't get me wrong, I love a great, fat, analog sounding synth like the next Depeche Mode fan, but this night was created to showcase not only the roots of "alternative rock" but to tell where it's gone since and everything in-between.

This week, we delve a bit into Britpop, Twee, Psyche, power-pop and other non-synth heavy genres. Enjoy.

p.s. My apologies if this Pulp vid makes you a bit queasy from motion sickness.

Transmission live at First Avenue Friday, Aug 5th for "Friday Night Videos"

Remember when you could go to dance clubs and hear the music you knew and loved? Remember when MTV used to play music videos? Remember when your older brother or that cool girl/guy you dated introduced you to the Ramones & Smiths for the first time?

Friday, August 5th in the First Avenue main room is your time to relive all those memories and tie them to the great indie rock that carries on their torch today. You'll hear your favorites from the punk, post-punk, new wave, no wave, synth pop, Brit pop, shoe gaze, college and indie rocks genres.

It's like the weekly Transmission dance night that's held at Clubhouse Jager every Wednesday, but moved to a club 15 x's it's size!

We tried it once before...and a magical thing happened, 1,300 people showed...during sxsw! Now. it's time for round two this August 5th

I invite you to all put on your red shoes and dance the blues!

Not only do I love this band and think they're massively underrated, but with the big Transmission party at First Avenue coming up quickly on Friday, August 5th, the title of this specific tune is exactly how I'm feeling in all the prep work that's going into the big event.

Check out the video of the day tomorrow to get a great feel for how the night will go down.

Transmission video of the day - The Producers "What's He Got"

Know what's great about having a blog like this? Being able to post videos and bands such as this. It's time to give the long forgotten Producers some time in the sun once again. It's debatable whether they really had that time in the first place. They existed in the early days of MTV when folks really grasped onto and cared about great power-pop artists that were in it because they loved it. Bands like the Romantics, Cheap Trick, the Knack, Cars, and loads of others who made feel-good music because it felt good!

We're heading into the weekend. A perfect time to let down the guard, slap a good buddy on the back, turn up the radio and pogo around the room. Because we can!

You'll hear more about power-pop and other fantastic bands you may or may not know down the road on this blog, but today, it's all about the Producers.

Transmission video of the day - Simple Minds "I Travel"

I am a John Hughes movie fanatic. Heck, who isn't? We all know Simple Minds and their 80's classic "Don't You (Forget About Me)" from the Breakfast Club, but have you ever taken the time to dig into their back catalog before they hit their watered-down, let's try-to-give-U2-a-run-for-their-money phase? If you like catchy, art rock and a lead singer cool enough to catch the eye & wedding finger of the Pretender's Chrissie Hynde then I highly recommend it.

Tonight on Transmission I'll be dedicating an entire set to new wave from Scotland. Sadly, Simple Minds did not make the cut so they're getting the spotlight on today's blog.

Fun fact: The Cocteau Twins got their name from an early Simple Minds tune called "No Cure" off their first record Life In a Day.

Transmission video of the day - Kraftwerk "Telephone Call"

Posted at 10:00 AM on July 20, 2011 by Jake Rudh
Filed under: Transmission

In yesterday's post, I mentioned how Kraftwerk are of one the three main ingredients to the complete "sound" of Transmission along with David Bowie and Roxy Music. Many of the artists you hear on the Current today would cite these Krautrock pioneers as a massive influence on their work.

On this Thursday's program we'll hear a Kraftwerk tune (spoiler alert), but it will not be this mid-career dance track. For those interested in learning more about the beginnings of Kraftwerk, their peers and the many artists they've influenced over the years, I highly recommend the documentary "Kraftwerk and the Electronic Revolution". On a side note, for those interested in a great Halloween costume, I recommend studying the cover of their "Man-Machine" release.

Transmission video of the day - Roxy Music "Love is the Drug"

One thing I've noticed in the 15+ years I've been hosting club events is that a majority of the music I play seems to be directly influenced by three main artists ... David Bowie, Kraftwerk & Roxy Music. I've been fortunate enough to see all three numerous times live, and each time I do, it only validates this notion.

Transmission video of the day - OMD "Electricity"

With the recent announcement of Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark making a rare, upcoming appearance at First Avenue on September 26th, I thought the "Electricity" video might be an appropriate post for the hype that it caused within the Transmission & synth communities both at the club and online. Big Audio Dynamite live in August, OMD in September...I have high hopes for October!

In honor of Bastille Day, we bring you the quirky & catchy "Ca Plane Pour Moi" by Plastic Bertrand. Though he's actually Belgian, this little new wave/pop-punk gem is one of the better known French vocal tracks of the era...at least in the states. Enjoy your weekend and thanks for checking out the debut of Transmission last night on the 89.3 airwaves! Already looking forward to show #2 next Thursday!
