For the last 4 years, we have attended the Austin City Limits festival, and enjoyed lots of great music together in Texas.

So these are my favorite three songs I've heard since I started listening to The Current. We went to school together and knew of each other and finally met a couple years later after I won $5grand off of a crossword scratch off. People say friends tend to leave once the moneys gone, and she's still with me after watching me blow it all in two weeks. We discovered we were the only ones either one of us knew that loved all the same music[including the love of the current]. I was homeless when we met, and she risked her living situation by having me stay with her for 5 weeks. Thankfully I found a place out in Becker because she helped me keep my head up. Thing is. Matt Novak from Arlinton, Virginia picked today's My 3 Songs set because...
"As a first-time father, I'd like to dedicate this set to my brand new baby boy. My wife and I often find ourselves playing music for him as we rock him to sleep, and these three songs are on our dedicated "Baby Playlist." And yes, the pun is fully intended with the last song. The Band of Horses tune might not be the most obvious song, but I think it really seems to fit for a parent having a child grow up... things change, the child moves on, etc., but through it all, no one will ever love their child more than the parent does. "

Steve from Apple Valley sent in this wonderful set about Thin Lizzy and their musical progeny:
1.) Thin Lizzy - Dancing in the Moonlight
2.) Van Hunt - Ride, Ride, Ride
3.) Ween - Gabrielle
"Just love the way [the last two songs] channel the sound of TL in different ways."
Thanks for the submission, Steve. I also would have added Belle & Sebastian's "I'm a Cuckoo," which pays explicit tribute to Thin Lizzy in its twin guitar parts and even references TL in the lyrics!

"Even though there is no way that three songs can embody the throngs of music lovers, eight stages of consistent musical bliss, the amazing city of Austin, dancing in a park turned mud pit, and the sun burned nose of this Minnesotan, I feel like I'd like to share a bit of the highlights with folks at home. Hopefully I can encourage some to make the trip down next year or in following years for what would be an unforgettable adventure. So here is a favorite, an Austin group, and one from closer to home."

" These songs are dedicated to the memory of Gordon "Gungi" Patterson. He was a sound engineer and road manager since the 1970s and he recently passed away after a 3-year battle with cancer. Standing at 6'11", the Scotsman was easy to spot mixing the sound at shows all over the world for a diverse group of acts over the course of his career, from Judas Preist to Damien Rice. The three songs chosen are from three bands he's been on the road with, showcasing the eclectic range of acts he helped look good and sound good for thousands of fans. And let his passing remind us of the fact that there are far too many unsung hereos in the music industry, aka, be nice to roadies!"

Matthew Steen from Eden Prairie, MN picked today's My 3 Songs set because...
"This may make the requests a bit cheesy, but I'm leaving for Montreal in a week for college and am beginning to feel the pangs of leaving my home of 18 years. "Going to a Town" has its obvious connection to leaving my home country, with Tunnels having a bit more subtle Montreal connection. Both Rufus and Win Butler of Arcade Fire are American ex-Pats who have musically flourished in Montreal (and attended McGill University, the school I'm going to) with the Arcade Fire having the disctinction of being one of (though certainly not the only) thing attracting me to this fantastic city.
However excited I may be, though, there's the obvious apprehension of leaving the friends (and naive youthful lovers) that have done so much to shape my identity. Every New Year's my small, close group gets together and picks a song to be the very first musical experience of the year. "All My Friends" was the consensus this year, and it still remains the most apt representation of what we're all emotionally going through, though providing a bit of a silver lining on my three songs.
If you choose to play this despite all the teen angst (though artfully done teen angst, if you'll indulge me) I thank you sincerely. The Current has played an immeasurably large part in my personal development, and for that I owe a huge debt to the Current, all of the hosts, and the Twin Cities themselves. Thank you.
Au revoir!

"I will MISS Minnesota!
After 3 years of attending school in Minneapolis, I'm moving to the East Coast on August 10. I've LOVED (LOVED!) the Current and will continue to stream it in DC and represent some MN love.
Hold Steady, of course, has solid MN connections and their Live Current version of "Stuck Between Stations" does the BEST Minneapolis shout-outs.
Solid Gold is my current FAVE Minneapolis band that I was introduced to via the Current, and have seen (stalked) several times in concert, including Rock the Garden.
The Kills don't have an obvious MN connection, but I was introduced to them via the Current (and a proud native son), and they had the BEST live show that I've seen in a long time.
Thanks, Current. I will miss MN! (Although a little less in Jan/Feb)."

This set combines his love of playing tunes from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album on his guitar with "Wild Wild Life" a song that he would listen to on the way to hockey and laugh his head off. We thought that this set would be a great way to let him know how incredible he is not only as a hockey player but our brother!!"

It may be the "weekend" for some people, but since it's still technically a weekday, we've still got a fresh Song of the Day and a My Three Songs set.
Today's Song of the Day is Greycoats' "Goodbye, Sweet Youth, Goodbye". I guess this is appropriate because it's my dog's birthday today. He turns 3 (his golden birthday!) so in dog years, he's of legal drinking age now.
Our My Three Songs set came to us from Jackie, who recently got engaged. Her relationship has been marked with a 'cloud' motif; she suggested the first and third tracks, and let us fill in the rest.
Tori Amos - "Bouncing Off Clouds"
The Temptations - "Cloud Nine"
Rilo Kiley - "Silver Lining"
Thanks, Jackie, and thanks to everyone else who suggested a M3S set today. Have a happy and safe Independence Day weekend!

" After hearing about the death of Michael Jackson, I immediately spent time watching a ton of his old videos. Which got me thinking about when MTV actually showed music videos. And how awesome it was! Reflecting upon the time of Music Television, I remembered the "Buzz Bin" which featured specific songs deemed "Buzz Clips" that were notable songs/videos from up and coming bands, a lot of which are still around today and grew to great success (For example: Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, Bjork). These three buzz clips I remember I really enjoyed
seeing on MTV in the early to mid 90's."

Erik Warg from Minneapolis picked today's My 3 Songs set because...
" These three songs come from albums that are constantly in my playlist. I cant remember a week where I have not listened to these three albums. The Silversun Pickups have a certain sound that seems to surround and takes ahold of me. I always seem to catch a new subtle bass line, guitar rift, or drum beat each time I listen. The first time I heard "Well Thought Out Twinkles" with its wonderful tempo, pacing, and its wonderful melding of sound, I became hooked on this band. The Kooks album is by far one of my favorite driving albums. It has a great upbeat, fun, sound that is impossible not to rock out to. This album is so much fun I tend to speed while listening to it. Finally, "How We Operate" by Gomez is a fantastic album. I can never get enough of it, and if you dont have it, go and pick it up, you will thank me. Even though my favorite song on that ablbum changes, I always get excited when "Cry on Demand" comes on. It showcases the musical talents of each of the band members, and the instrumental portion of the song is one of my favorites. I cannot count how many times I have sat in my driveway listening to this song. "
Silversun Pickups - "Well Thought Out Twinkles"
The Kooks - "You Don't Love Me"
