This whole week has been about (belated) Spring cleaning and (unnessesary) nostalga. Looking through old letters, photos and records. It got me curious about the music library at the station.
So, I sat down and started looking through a lot of music that we rarely play from our in-studio stack. I'm aware that my job is wonderful and one of the rare treats is to just sit and listen to music for hours on end. So tonight I'm going to toss in a bunch of things I found that were fun suprises or just enjoyable sets that I haven't seen for a really long time. There's a full in-studio from Feist taken from our first year as a station and a full session from Sonic Youth (the only visit from them so far).

Tonight is a great night for live music fiends. We're replaying the highlights from this years Rock The Garden starting at 9pm. If you want to take it a step further you can check out the photos over on the website and please both your visual and aural senses.

Man, I don't know about you, but the live music was great this weekend and being able to bring you guys the entire Rock The Garden show live was a lot of work, but I think it came off beautifully. And for those of you who came out the the show, it was a blast meeting up and shaking hands and posing for pictures in the wet mucky rain. You guys rule.
If you weren't able to make it to the show, we're going to be replaying the entire Rock The Garden next Sunday starting at 9pm.
Tonight's In The Studio is a bit shorter than usual, so there's only one full in-studio session. It's Sunday and that means another edition of In The Studio. After a weekend of playing dress up for David Bowie, biking on open streets while listening to some local tunes and, maybe, comsuming a few too many adult beverages I think tonight we'll take it easy.
We'll toss in a couple Bowie covers, play some live tunes from bands that played around town over the weekend, play a couple of brand new in-studio cuts for you and chill out with a couple of full in-studio sessions.

Well, I'm have some pretty wicked watery eyes and sneezing like crazy, so it must be Spring. I also have my first sun burn of the year, so I guess I'm feeling pretty seasonal. Hopefully you have a bit of sun kiss and less of the histamine issues.
Did you get down to Austin, MN to check out Tapes n' Tapes with Mary Lucia? Were you at Grand Ol Day? Was it more of a Northern Spark hid-in-the-dark sort of a weekend? So much greatness in the live department this past week I was barely able to contain myself...ergo the sunburn, i suppose.

I don't know about you, but if the world is about to end I'm glad I'll go out listening to music. That being said, we had some pretty epic rain storms in the twin cities and it felt like perhapse the end was near. Even with all the splashing around there was still plenty of great music to see around town.
The art-a-whirl kept everything going even with the wicked storms and seeing the soggy people with smiles on their faces was more than enough to make me proud to live in this state. After seeing some serious rocking out happening over the weekend I decided that I would dig up some pretty rocking in-studios for you. I think people often think that in-studios at the station need to be acoustic or taken down a few notches, not true my friend, not true.
Also on the way, a full in-studio with up and coming British producer (slash angel voiced) James Blake and a hip shaking full in-studio with Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears.

First off, a HUGE thanks to everyone that either joined or renewed their membership to The Current, you rock! It's always good to know that you appreciate what we do here at the station.
Second, what a weekend for live music. There were so many shows to see that I was extremely over whelmed with the choices. For those of you that got to a lot of them what was your favorite show this weekend? For those who didn't, you're in luck. Most of the bands that were playing around town have stopped in our studio and brought their best live music with them. It's like you were at all the shows (minus someone accidentally elbowing your drink onto you, it's ok guy I'm not mad).
Plus, Sharon Jones is coming back to town on Tuesday so I dug up an in-studio performance from her that was taken in 2008 and we'll play that to pump you up for her show.
Let me know if there are any in-studios you want to hear again or a band that you loved live and I'll see if there's a track I can pull out for everyone else to check out.

SxSW is over and the snow is still here. So, while April might not mean Spring has sprung for Minnesota, it does mean that a whole lot of bands are going to be coming through on tour.
It's going to be getting pretty busy around the Current studio for the next few months, so I'm going to try and pull out the best of the bunch to play for you every week. This week fresh from playing (and rocking out a church) at SxSW was Rural Alberta Advantage. This band has been in town just about every year and each time they play a bigger and bigger venue. This time in town the played a sold out show at First Ave. Nils Edenloff, the lead singer of the band, couldn't believe that they had actually sold out the show and Amy, keyboardist and backing vocals, admitted that she listened to The Current when they were on the road.
In fact, that's how they found the opener for their show, James Vicent McMorrow. The Irish singer-songwriter who reminded me a lot of Bon Iver, stopped by the Current studios as well to tell Mark Wheat all about making the record in a one bedroom house by the sea.

Fun fact you may not know about me, I love a good graph. Especially one that connects things together that are a bit intricate and muddled in every day life. Especially one that has to do with music and local musicians. Andrea Swensson, City Pages and Gimme Noise music editor and all around cool chick, put together a superb graph of Gayngs and their twisted family tree. I was so inspired by it and the huge show that is happening tonight at First Ave, that I decided to play 6 degrees of Gayngs (although there are really too many degrees to count for most of the artists in the band).
Also, some great in-studios last week from Nicole Atkins and Telekinesis. If you have any favorite in-studio sessions that you have heard and want to hear again or an in-studio song to request, lay it on me at jade@mpr.org.

Another busy week here at the station. We lived through a crazy snow storm and over 7,000 kids and their parents hanging out at the MIA for Rock The Cradle. On top of that we've been compiling the greatest oscar soundtrack to play you this weekend with clips (some rediculous, yet unforgetable) mixed in.
To keep that ball rolling a bit into In The Studio, tonight I'll be tossing in some songs that are about movies, some movie titles or maybe just remind me of a movie. The full in-studios this week are from Alexi Murdoch, Bill DeVille got to hang out with him and he blew everyone away with his simple and beautiful songs.
I sat down with indie-adored Wild Nothing (Pitchfork gave them the coveted Best New Music icon the week their album Gemini came out) while they were in town to play a show at the Turf Club.

It was a crazy hectic week with the member drive going on and prepping for Rock the Cradle. We still managed to squeeze in a couple of in-studios, just because we know you dig them.
Bill got to hang out with Justin Townes Earl, the full in-studio aired earlier today during United States of Americana. And Justin's opening act Jessica Lea Mayfield stopped in to chat with Mary Lucia about her worst breakup and what it was like working with Dan Auerbach. We'll take a listen to her in-studio during the first hour.
Also, the Doomtree crew stopped by to celebrate Sims' new album Bad Time Zoo and told Mark Wheat all about it. The second hour we'll listen to that in-studio and play some in-studios songs from the archive that haven't been spun in a very long time.

It's that time of year...chilly, frost bitten...and possibly love bitten. Valentine's day is tomorrow and whether you are feeling the love or feeling the loath there's something in the live archives for you. Not surprisingly there were a multitude of songs to pick from, so as always, feel free to hit up the Current in-studio archives to find more for your Valentine's playlist.
Also in the mix, a full in-studio from Fitz and the Tantrums that blew us all away here at the station. Jill Riley walked out of the room saying it might be her favorite of the year. Wow, what a week. We put out an album of local and live music called Local Current, Vol. 1. It rocks so hard that I had to put a couple of the songs into the mix for tonights In The Studio. The sold out birthday bash over at First Ave was great, although, my dance moves should probably never be reproduced on the First Ave stage...
In the studios this week, we were very lady power charged. We had the raw and ripped vocals of Illinois native Lissie right before her sold out show at the Cedar last Thursday. The '90's femme fatale Liz Phair also stopped by and talked about her latest album Funstyle and the coolness of being on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
