Birthdays:

Karen Carpenter would have been 62 today.
Jon Bon Jovi is 50.
Singer Chris Martin of Coldplay is 35.

Today In:

1964 - The Beatles began work in London on the film A Hard Day's Night.

1974 - Stevie Wonder took home five Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year for Innervisions.

1988 - Paul Simon won record of the year for Graceland, the first time a winning record did not hit the top 40. U2's The Joshua Tree won album of the year. Little Richard got a standing ovation for announcing himself as winner for best new artist, and complaining the Grammys never gave him anything.

1999 - Bob Dylan was the first musician to play at the House Of Blues at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. For the encore, Dylan was joined by Bono on "Knockin' On Heaven's Door."

1999 - Dusty Springfield died of cancer at the age of 59.

2006 - Singer Gary Glitter was convicted of obscene acts with two young Vietnamese girls. He was sentenced to prison.

Birthday Highlight:

Lou Reed is 70 today. From his days as leader of the seminal group the Velvet Underground to his long and influential solo career, Reed has been one of rock's most revered and respected artists (last year's weird collaboration with Metallica nonwithstanding). Happy 70th birthday to a rock n' roll survivor.
