Over the summer Minnesota Public Radio teamed up with Freewheel Bike Shop to giveaway a bike to one lucky winner. We traveled around with our own bicycle all around town, courtesy of Freewheel, promoting the big giveaway at all of our summer events. Matt Frank was selected earlier this fall as the winner of that new bike, and he followed up with us recently to let us know what he was up to with his new ride.
I've lived in Minneapolis for eight years and have been an avid cyclist for the past four. I own a 21-speed road bike that I use both for commuting and recreation. Each year towards late fall I wipe the bike down and store it inside for winter; and each year I go into bicycle withdrawal, unwilling to ride in icy conditions. While in college at the University of Minnesota I had a roommate who biked year round, as well as a few co-workers who ride bikes year-round - and I thought they were all crazy, until I became more educated about winter biking.
This year, after realizing I spend close to $100/month in the winter on public transit, I decided to give winter biking a go. After attending a few winter bike-related classes and researching tips and techniques online I began thinking about buying a single speed bike to use as my dedicated winter bike, so as to not have to worry about maintaining my 21-speed in salty, cold conditions.
I was still going back and forth about whether or not to buy another bike and give winter riding a try, and it was at that moment that I received an e-mail from MPR, alerting me to the fact that I had won a bicycle giveaway.
As soon as I read the e-mail I knew it was a sign - this was the year to take up winter cycling. I used the Freewheel gift card from MPR to purchase a cheap single speed bicycle and spent the remaining money on accessories - studded tires, clip on fenders, and an array of cold weather cycle gear.
Thanks to MPR and Freewheel I now have all the necessary gear, a new bike, and a new outlook on staying active year-round.
We're thrilled to have such an adventurous and dedicated rider win this prize. Happy riding!
Congrats, Matt. I, too, added a single speed bike to my collection this year. Love it.
Good cycling!
Cheers,
Tony
