Coldplay in St. Paul - August 2012

Coldplay announced today an enormous touring slate for 2011-12, which will be capped off by a visit to the Xcel Center in St. Paul on August 11, 2012 - a cool 8 months from now, which conveniently allows us plenty of time to make summer vacation requests. It certainly looks to be a big night, and is already inspiring responses among Twin Cities music buffs. Star Tribune's Chris Riemenschneider & I have playfully sparred about Coldplay, so he is naturally intrigued by their return, although he does seem to think they should visit a dentist. City Pages' Andrea Swensson seems a little disappointed that the band never played the Twin Cities in an "intimate setting" capacity. This will be the band's fourth visit to town -- and all four shows have been in arenas (Target Center in 03, Xcel in 05, 08, and now in 12).
My CD of the Week review of their latest, Mylo Xyloto, was uncharacteristically tepid; since I submitted the review, I don't think I've spun the album once. But against all odds, I'm still kind of excited for this show, because with Coldplay's wealth of hits, any concert-goer is virtually guaranteed a solid experience. If you took the four best songs from every Coldplay album (plus "Life in Technicolor II", natch), you have a rock-solid set list. I saw them here in '03 (right when their U.S. rocket was starting to take off) and '05 (ahh, ex-girlfriends) and honestly, I wouldn't say no to seeing them again. I am curious to see the spectacle, and curious to hear if the "booming anthems designed for stadiums" (my words) indeed resonate in said climate. I'm more excited about this show than I thought I would be.

Mac, I think Andrea says in her article that SHE has never seen them here in an intimate setting.. ;) They have indeed played here in a small venue for the A Rush of Blood to the Head Tour, @ First Avenue 8/14/2002.
Went to that one, great show. Can't remember if they played here for Parachutes or not. Getting old ;)
