Sharon Van Etten's third album is due for release on Jagjaguwar on February 7, 2012. The album is her follow-up to her breakthrough mini-epic Epic, which dropped late in 2010. Epic is one of my favorite albums of the last 5 years, so I'm understandably a little excited to hear Sharon's new album -- in fact, I already have.
Sharon dropped by the Current studios last month to preview her new album. She told us then that her album would be titled Tramp, in reference to her homeless wanderings over the last year. I didn't know if the information was embargoed, so I just jotted down a few details she revealed about the new record, with the intention of speaking at length about it once I knew for sure she wanted the information to be public. The note in my phone from that night reads "Tramp. Early february. produced by aaron. Warsaw". The "aaron" in question is Aaron Dessner of the National, and "Warsaw" is the opening track. I didn't make any more notes from that point onward, as I wanted to try to absorb as much of the record I could. One song later in the album features an enormous drum sound, so I asked if it was Bryan Devendorf of the National on drums. Sharon said, "No, it's Matt Barrick," at which point I wanted to put my foot in my mouth, before she added, "from the Walkmen." I exclaimed, "Oh! You mean the OTHER awesome drummer of indie rock?!" Although I don't remember the song title (I only learned most of the song titles today), I think the Barrick track will be an instant standout when one listens for the first time.
Tramp is a very beautiful record, one with intriguing layers of both vocals and instrumentation. I'm confident these songs will help her gain an even wider audience. I've been consistently thunderstruck by Sharon Van Etten's music, and I'm excited at the prospect of her music causing a groundswell in 2012.
