Mikey Welch, who was the bassist for the band Weezer was found dead yesterday in a Chicago hotel room. A drug overdose is suspected as the cause, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.
Welch was born in Syracuse, N.Y. He got his start in the Boston scene where he played in several bands. He then landed in a side project led by Weezer's Rivers Cuomo in 1997. Welsh then officially joined Weezer after original bassist Matt Sharp left the group.
Mikey Welsh played the bass on on Weezer's 2001 self-titled third album, often referred to as the "Green Album," before quitting the band due to the endless touring and a nervous breakdown.
Rest in peace, Mikey.
