Monday: Baja Marimba Band, "Rides Again" (1965)
This group was led by marimba player and former Tiajuana Brass member Julius Wechter. They were able to cash in on the "south of the border" sound made famous by A&M Records (think Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Sergio Mendes, The Sandpipers).
Tuesday: Gary Numan, "I, Assassin" (1982)
Gary Numan's last record to have any commercial impact whatsoever was also the one he claimed was his best - although it had nothing on the scale of a "Cars"-quality single. The song "We Take Mystery To Bed" barely made a dent on the charts, but it's an awesomely funky, innovative, Bowie-esque tune.
Wednesday: Christine McVie, "The Legendary Christine Perfect Album" (1976 reissue)
Before Christine McVie married John McVie she was known as Christine Perfect. She released a solo record in 1970, just after leaving the band Chicken Shack to join up with Fleetwood Mac. This album was reissued in 1976 after the new Fleetwood Mac lineup (Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie, Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks) was gaining popularity.
Thursday: Willie Nelson, "Always On My Mind" (1982)
Willie's smash hit album the early 80s contained the famous title track and a host of other covers - few as oddly chosen as his duet with Waylong Jennings, Procul Harum's "A Whiter Shade Of Pale."
Friday: Prefab Sprout, "Swoon" (1984)
An 80s jem brought in by Jacquie Fuller, host of our very 80s-centric show Teenage Kicks on Saturday mornings. We played "Ghost Town Blues."
