United States of Americana remembers Johnny Cash's bassman, Marshall Grant

For today's show we remembered Marshall Grant, Johnny Cash's bass player for several decades. He suffered an aneurysm 1 1/2 weeks ago and died at the age of 83. Grant on bass, and Luther Perkins on guitar were the original Tennesee Two, who backed cash on his earliest recordings on the famed Sun Records label. Grant toured with Cash for more than twenty years and later managed The Statler Brothers.

We also listened to a bunch of new americana from Frank Turner, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Guy Clark and the Australian artist know as Wagons. We also listened to a Dan Penn classic recorded by the Flying Burrito Brothers and one of his own. Dan Penn plays The Dakota in Minneapolis tonight.
