Hurricane Irene Threatens New York City's Music Scene

Hitting the Bahamas on Thursday and then making its way up the coast, Hurricane Irene put New York City in a state of emergency according to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. While the hurricane is bad news for citizens and officials alike, it's even more inconvenient for musicians, causing the indefinite postponement of performances from a handfull of artists including Gogol Bordello, The Roots, and Dave Matthews Band, who were scheduled to play at the Dave Matthews Band Caravan festival on Governors Island, New York, as well as many others.


Esther Gordy Edwards Dies at 91

Esther Gordy Edwards, sister to Berry Gordy, Jr., died last Wednesday due to natural causes at the age of 91. Esther remained an integral part of the company by creating the Motown museum in Detroit, one of Michigan's top tourist attractions.


The True Colors Residence

LGBT activist and 80's pop star Cyndi Lauper is opening a housing facility to homeless gay, lesbian, transgender, and bisexual youths called the True Colors Residence in Harlem. The facility will consist of 30 apartments with rent specific to personal income, as well as job placement and a safe place to stay.


Charlotte Gainsbourg Is Back With Double Album

Titled Stage Whisper, Charlotte Gainsbourg is releasing a double album consisting of live performances and unreleased tracks from her 2009 album IRM. Out on Nevember 7th, Stage Whisper will follow the release of an EP, Terrible Angels, which was partially written and produced by Beck and will be released on September 5th, 2011.


CMJ Begins Announcing Line-Up

The CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival has begun announcing their 2011 music line-up. Some of the noteworthy bands already announced include Wild Flag, Eleanor Friedberger, Neon Indian, CSS, Handsome Furs, Portugal. The Man, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.


Karen O's "Psycho-Opera"

Stop The Virgens is the title of Yeah Yeah Yeahs front-woman Karen O's "psycho opera", a production she co-created with KK Barrett, the show's design director. O had this to say about the opera: "This piece isn't aiming to be all about spectacle or abstraction, though there is a good helping of both in the production [...] I'm hoping to create an original live experience. It should feel like a psychedelic ride laced with catharsis."
