Sing Out

Interview Audio:

Mason Jennings is one of the artists that the Current has been most fond of over the years, and he's certainly a favorite among our listeners. Today, he came on the Morning Show to discuss his new album Minnesota and to spin a few tracks off of it for the first time. You can listen to the audio above.

In honor of him gracing our airwaves yet again, let's take a look at the rest of our archive of Mason-related goodness here at The Current.

Mason Jennings has stopped by the Current for three different in-studio sessions over the years, and you can check them all out in our website's archive. Here' s one from 2006, one from 2009 and yet another from late last year. You can also check out his performance at last summer's Minnesota State Fair. Last but not least, we have a Theft of the Dial session that he recorded with us a couple years back.

So enjoy all of these things, and be on the look-out (or the listen-out) next week for a top-secret Mason Jennings-related Current Road Trip tour announcement. And yes, that's all we're allowed to tell you about it for the time being... that, and it's in support of Hunger-Free Minnesota, a charity to which he lent his songs "Tourist" and "Lilacs"

What is the name of the charity again? I Googled "End hunger MN" but didn't hit it. Can you provide a link?

I'm all for the idea of the Minnesota Food Shelf and helping others get the food they need when found in desperate circumstances. But let's be honest — it's an insurmountable dream to end hunger in Minnesota by putting a proverbial bandage on the problem. Giving out food alone will not solve the greater issues that bring about hunger in the first place.

We do need the food shelves — no question about it and we ought to support them. But if we're to "end hunger in Minnesota" we also need to provide the sort of things that lead towards self-sustainability and a strong community infrastructure to ensure that everyone that needs help getting on their feet gets it. Things like access to education (the kind of education that leads to or creates jobs), better money/wealth/debt management education, an easy access to information that will help one be able to sustain themselves, and the sort of community or infrastructure to connect people with people.

Simply giving out food to those in need — while being an invaluable service we offer in Minnesota — won't end hunger in itself. The Chinese proverb says it best, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Let's find a way to both give out the fish, and teach, help and enable them in the same stroke.

....course the other saying also applies...

"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."

The website you're looking for is hungerfreemn.org. It has lots of information about hunger and a three-year plan to close the gap of 100 million missing meals in Minnesota. If you'd like to be part of this campaign, join the movement on the website. Not asking for money -- just interest in the issue.
