9:30 Coffee Break: Oh, Fer Cute!

I ran into a friend yesterday at the grocery store. She said, "I heard you and Jill on the radio this morning - you two sounded cute!" Cute? She meant it as a compliment, but I've always tended to recoil from the term (it's something the boys in high school would tell you when they liked you, but didn't want to date you - right up there with "nice personality.") Nevetheless, Jill and I have decided it's time to be at peace with cuteness - especially since we both have a secret soft spot for sugary pop songs. For today's 9:30 Coffee Break - get out the toy instruments! We're celebrating all songs cute, twee, and precious. Or as Jill says, "Songs cute enough to eat." Submit your suggestions below.

Songs Played:
Belle and Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress
Rilo Kiley - Portions for Foxes
Let's Go Sailing - Icicles
Regina Spektor - The Calculation
Mates of State - For the Actor

This is the cutest, twee-est song I know. It's about the girl who's trying to steal your boyfriend, and it's ADORABLE. Sadly, that's the only song by them I know--a much cooler friend passed it on to me, and I have no idea how she got it, and I think they dissolved after the three song EP....but maaan, this is the cutest song ever and you have to listen to it.

BUBBLE TOES
I've been really down lately and I would like this song to cheer me up. My boyfriend plays it for me to make me feel better, but he's not able to right now. Yesturday was a horrible day, and this would be great.
Thanks so much.

Both the song "The Whole World and You" or the song "Haiku" by Tally Hall are just ab-so-FREAKING-lutely and irresistably acorable. Like the kind of songs where you bob your head back and forth and maybe throw up a little bit.

I agree with the "Such Great Heights" recommendation.

I 2nd the request for "It's Oh So Quiet" by Bjork. I've never had a song played on the air... please, please, please pick my request :) Happy Friday, everyone!

Agree with Fred! Boo Rilo Kiley. Don't get me wrong, that's a good song, and Jenny Lewis is amazing, beautiful, and possibly the coolest woman on the planet, but, that is not a cute song, and definitely not twee.

Each week, when I listen to United States of Americana, I find myself scratching my head and saying, "why is The Current ignoring Patty Griffin, the musicians' musician"?

Patty Griffin is admired and respected by the music community from artists like Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Kasey Chambers, The Dixie Chicks and David Matthews, to name a few.

Yet, she is never played on this wonderful 2 hour show. Why is that? Plus, the song, "Useless Desires" which was played by the former TRUE "Morning Show", was played fairly regularly; yet now....if requested, the self-righteous powers-that-be currently sitting in their thrones have somehow placed a restriction of playing this song. Don't believe me? Do a Patty Griffin search on this site for this particular song. It's not even available to display. If you call in for it...the air personality will not play it stating it may have profanity (which is not true) and/or it does not fit the format of The Current. Which makes no sense at all for daily play on The Current. However, accepting this beyond lame self-righteous excuse, one would believe that AT LEAST her work is worthy of playing on the Sunday morning show, United States of Americana. But that's not the case, if you request any Patty Griffin songs, they will not be played because she has somehow not been deemed worthy of playing on The Current in any way, shape or form. Even on a show like US of A that's perfectly suited to play Patty Griffin on a regular basis, she will not be played. If you buy into the predetermined excuse from the higher-up corporate weasels of The Current, they will not allow Patty Griffin to play on the airwaves NOW...yet it's alright to play Glen Campbell instead? Help me understand the alleged reasoning of shunning Patty Griffin's work from airplay on The Current. More so...why can't you play "Useless Desires" by Patty Griffin?
