With the help of our listeners, we pick an iconic Minnesota artist to feature on-air once an hour over the Fourth of July holiday. Last year, you chose Atmosphere; the year before that, Prince. Now, the polls are open for the 2011. Who will it be? You tell us.

You should really add Grant Hart's name also to The Husker Du choice. He's done some pretty great stuff post-Huskers as well...

wellst, thanks for the suggestion. I've update the poll, and double checked that If Husker Du / Bob Mould win, we'll definitely play Grant Hart tracks too!

The Suburbs!

It's the fourth of july, we need somthing Proud loud and explosive like a fire work, and honnestly bob dylan puts my to sleep! its gotta be fast and up beat somthing you can Grill out to, or relax on the lake to, or even just lounge around the house to, and bob dylan would be the opposite of all of that.

just giving my imput

Very happy Atmosphere isn't in the poll this year. Voted for the Mats, but you really go wrong with any of these choices.

LOW. I live out of state, but when I hear LOW, it reminds me of my time in MN.

Thank God almighty we don't have to deal with the most over-rated local group Atmosphere...this year.

Why on earth is Bob Dylan leading the poll? I was hoping the recent and disgusting massive overplay day(s) of Dylan on The Current would have satisfied the Dylan fans. I guess this is proof that the old folks of MPR with MONEY....have more influence than I would have that possible on The Current. Then again, I'm not surprised with the play-list of The Current these days. Let's just say...the soul has been sold.

@Mark H What are you talking about? I am 26 and broke, yet I voted for Dylan. I guess that $5 a month is doing it's job

@ Mark H - I voted for Dylan last year and I voted for Dylan this year because he is the ultimate Minnesota musician, having influenced just about everyone. I'm not old or rich, and I think your assumptions have made a you-know-what out of you. Bitter much?

LOW!

Posted by znthomps | June 25, 2011 11:05 AM

Hmm, that's a tough one - Bob Dylan, the most influential songwriter of the 20th century and still going strong.

@Mark H. - The playlist and library is as good as it has ever been. And the station is the best we've ever had in the Twin Cities, and that includes REV105. Stop complaining ya poser. Oh, and Atmosphere is terrific.

Voted for the 'Mats. They qualify as favorite. Mould/Sugar/Husker Du a second by a millimeter.

I vote The Replacements! Bob Dylan is a legend, but with his 70th birthday in May, we already had a Bob Dylan weekend recently. With "Color Me Obsessed", it would be nice to feature The Replacements over the holiday weekend. Wouldn't mind if Soul Asylum won the poll, I always felt they were underrated. I always enjoy hearing "deeper" album cuts on The Current. Looking forward to hearing whomever wins- they are all great artists who've made Minnesota proud :)

Really? These are great bands, but none has even come close to the song book of Bob Dylan. The greatest song writer of our time!

Why is The Current stuck in the past? Our music scene is so much more diverse than this. If we must stick with the white-males-only theme, can we at least get Mason Jennings on there? And if you're willing to let the ladies in, how about Haley Bonar? Let's embrace the artists making great music now who represent our community!

@ Erica - What are you talking about? Both years The Current has done this, the artists selected were not white and do make music "now," that being Prince and Atmosphere. Additionally, the selected artist needs to have a catalog large enough to provide an assortment of music for the weekend, which is why some local artists might not be on the ballot (yet).

The Current, imo, does a fantastic job day in and day out to promote the local music scene's up and coming artists. It's part of their mission statement. No other station embraces our musical community like the Current. I swear - some people just want to complain.

Keep doing what you're doing Current staff!

Agreed Dave. Well stated.

I'm voting for the Replacements since we just celebrated Bob's 70th with 70.

rock on.

Come on. U just did Dillion for his b-day. Time to play someone else.

Posted by john | June 25, 2011 8:21 PM

@ Heidi - thanks. Though Erica has a point.

Next year - Babes in Toyland!

Posted by Drae | June 26, 2011 12:37 PM

I voted Soul Asylum but would much rather have went for Cloud Cult.

Cant Grill to Dylan. You can Grill to the Replacents though! I do it all the time.

Minnesota greatest band.

Posted by John | June 26, 2011 7:54 PM

Yes, the Suburbs! I just voted for Bob though...does this mean that I voted twice?

Posted by Jenny | June 26, 2011 7:57 PM

Agree with all who've plainly stated that Dylan is a Legend, he will always be remembered as Minnesota's, if not America's, greatest contribution to modern Rock roots, but his 70th played him well, and often.

Time for a fresh playlist, and that can only be Paul Westerberg's under-rated, and very under-appreciated writing! if you listen to his lyrics, he's every bit the wordsmith of Dylan's fabric.

" I used to live at home, now I stay at their house. "

Powerful, and there are scores more of these gems on Tim, alone!! Bring on Independence Day with a Swingin' Party because Here Comes a Regular!!!

Peace yo, spike ;}

There's a lot of unnecessary bitterness and hatred in this thread, kinda sad.... Not really the point of this Icon thing.

Can never get too much DYLAN, although if a separate category was made for other newer folk singers like Mason Jennings or Jeremy Messersmith, I just might send my vote that way.
