Wednesday Coffee Break: Booty Songs

Merriam-Webster defines booty as "Plunder taken (as in war); especially: plunder taken on land as distinguished from prizes taken at sea." Well, that's not helpful, is it? Sure, that's the "original" use of the word, but hasn't the other one surpassed it by now in popular parlance?

Today's 9:30 Coffee Break will be a showcase of some of the songs that have celebrated the derrierre, the hindquarters, the rump, with that awesome word. Booty songs, today on the Coffee Break.

Songs played:
Beastie Boys "Professor Booty"
Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears "Booty City"
Sly and the Family Stone "Loose Booty"
KC and the Sunshine Band "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty"
Queen "Fat Bottomed Girls" (DJ Z-Trip remix)

This Coffee Break topic must have been fate. I've had Queen's "Fat Bottomed Girls" in my head ALL morning.

So, that's my suggestion.

Surely Professor Booty from Check your head by the Beastie Boys would be a prime candidate.

Posted by e | June 29, 2011 9:03 AM

Can we nix Sir Mix-A-Lot and just go with Jonathan Coulton's excellent cover of "Baby Got Back"?

"Shake Your Rump" - Beastie Boys

"Da Butt" - E.U.

"Her Against Me" - Afghan Whigs (think about it....)

Posted by Kevin | June 29, 2011 9:06 AM

Besides the obvious ones from the rap genre (Mixalot's "Big Butts," "Rumpshaker," "Whoomp There It Is," etc.), there is the very cheesy country tune, "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk," and the tune "Baby Make Her Blue Jeans Talk." The Talking Heads sing, in (I think) "Crosseyed and Painless": "The wold moves on a woman's hips."

Did you know, by the way, that "badonkadonk" is a bit of slang onomatopoeia? If you have "junk in your trunk," that junk will rattle about when you go around corners and/or hit the brakes, making a sound like "badonkadonk."

I listen to the Current so I don't have to listen to "booty" songs. You might as well go all out and demonstrate how classy this topic is an play Ke$ha, Booty Call.

I won't be listening, however.

Feelin' On Yo Booty - R. Kelly.

Funny this is the topic, I just did a breakdown of this video on my blog. It's really something else.

Prince has a great unreleased track "called "Wonderful A$$" (not sure if I need the $s or not on the blog here), but I'm sure his lawyers wouldn't allow you to play it even if you had your hands on it.

Otherwise, I guess i'd go with "Fat Bottomed Girls" from Queen.
