The Morning Show Coffee Break

How do you take your coffee? Cream? Sugar? Messersmith?

For June's Coffee Break Road Trip - when we travel to one lucky local business to provide coffee and treats from Gigi's Cafe and Bakery - we chose the offices of Community Involvement Programs in Minneapolis. But this time, we had an extra special surprise in store.

When we contacted Kelly Burt, the employee who had submitted the entry, she was extremely excited that we'd picked her company, but she also joked in passing: "Do you think you could bring Jeremy Messersmith along?" She's a huge fan, and that got Jill thinking: "Hmmm, we wonder if Jeremy is busy that morning."

Kelly had told us we'd have "special, labeled parking" outside when we arrived (and indeed, there was a sign by the first space that read "Parking For Steve Seel and Jill Riley"), and she was so enthusiastic in her communication with us that we feared she might meet us in the parking lot and see Jeremy in the van - thus spoiling the surprise. So, we dropped him off a block away (this was his idea, you should know), and told him we'd text him the signal to come down after everybody was settled in with their coffee and treats (the insane notion of Jeremy Messersmith walking down Broadway by himself with his guitar case in hand wasn't lost on any of us). When the time came, I went outside and ushered him in - and the two of us had to stoop under the office's windows like ninjas as we snuck in, so they wouldn't see him ahead of time. When he came in, the office went crazy, and Kelly shreiked in delight. Jeremy played three songs, practically singing right to her.

Jeremy was an incredible sport and told us he had a great time. We could not possibly be more appreciative that he would do this for us and for some unsuspecting fans!

This is so neat! I only wish there were pictures of Steve and Jeremy Messersmith hiding under the windows like ninjas.

Thank you so much for picking CIP and suprising Kelly. The organization has been under such pressure with the looming state shutdown. This was a huge boost to everyone's spirits and morale.
