For the past two years, The Current has celebrated the Fourth of July weekend by celebrating the career of a different Minnesota musician. In 2009, Prince provided the soundtrack to the long weekend, and last year we spotlighted longtime Current faves Atmosphere. We're pleased to announced that for 2011's Fourth of July weekend, our Minnesota icon is none other than Hibbing, MN's own Bob Dylan, who won our poll with over a third of the vote!
We'll be playing choice cuts from throughout Dylan's entire career once an hour all weekend, so don't forget to tune in! Tell us your favorite Dylan album below in the comments section.
excellent way to spend the holiday! please make sure to play "love minus zero/no limit" :)
The good news about Bob Dylan being overplayed this holiday weekend is we can actually look forward to next year's vote when Bob Dylan will NOT be in the voting ballot.
Mark H, If you really have that level of antipathy towards Bob Dylan being selected, you probably shouldn't be regularly listening to this radio station.
I'd recommend Cities 97 or KQRS, they may be better alternatives for you, if your musical sensibilities are limited.
@ Mark H - your anger over this weekend's featured artist is a bit odd. It's as if you have control issues and you're lashing out at the Current and their audience. Dude - it's just some music for 3 days. Not really worth all the animosity you're spreading around. You didn't get what you wanted and now you're acting like a spoiled brat. Grow up.
In 2007, I took an English course at St. Thomas University titled "The Poetry of Bob Dylan" The class was amazing, my large textbook had every word he'd written into a song (excluding his 2006 release, Modern Times)! I loved writing literary-poetic theory on Bob's verses from tracks like Hurricane, the Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, and Lay, Lady, Lay. It was a really wonderful experience and probably the easiest English class I've ever taken; it really made me look at Bob Dylan from a more academic and intelligent perspective, not only is he the greatest folk and rock musican of the Baby Boomer age, but he has transcended into the greatest American Troubadour, a modern Sosicles with a humble attitude. His music is eye-opening and his words are pure yet with all this admiration, I still think his voice sounds like two cats fighting in a bag. : )
Oops! I'm getting my Greek poets confused! Meant to reference Sositheus, not Sosicles, who actually may not have been anyone in history. Way to ruin my own comment ; )
Ben and Drae, It's unfortunate that you feel it's necessary to blog-spank me for just voicing my opinion. As for your suggestion of moving my dial over to KQRS or Cities 97 - no thank you. I'm a sustaining member that feels it's alright to simply give my two-cents. God forbid that I don't LOVE everything The Current does. NO radio station is perfect, I know this. But I'd like to think that the big boys and girls of the blog can handle a simple comment about a lacking thrill of this weekend's chosen Minnesota Icon. Next time, let me know where I need to send my comments to so you can review and approve my blog mention. I'd hate to blog something that rattles your cage. Please forgive me. I can only hope to still be worthy of going to heaven. I will pray for my soul.
It would seem to me distinct disdain for Bob Dylan is really not in keeping with the majority of musical taste that comprises listeners to the Current.
I'm just kinda taken back by it. Is all.
A little shocked that someone would complain about this artist being played and featured.
Songs from my two favorite Dylan albums, Street Legal & Planet Waves, should get some love. Especially "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)" and "Never Say Goodbye."
Excited to stream The Current at work this weekend!
My favorite Dylan album is Bringing It All back Home. Would love to hear any track from it.
I first heard "A Sweetheart Like You" about 5 yrs ago on a drive back to my hometown in So MN to visit family. The DJ I believe may have been Mark Wheat, explained that it was a song he and his wife shared on their anniversary. I heard the line, "you could be known as the most beautiful woman who ever crawled across cut glass to make a deal" and bought the Infidels album as soon as I could get to a record store. I just heard the song on the current today as part of the MN icon weekend and wanted to say thanks for helping me discover some of the deeper tracks of Dylan, and Mark Knopfler's guitar was a pleasant surprise as well! Cheers!
Ben and Drae, Are you MPR members? I sure hope so...
Ugh, Add me to the list of folks that have heard ENOUGH Bob Dylan tributes in my life. It's just an uninspired choice. I was even a big fan of his once upon a time, but it just gets sooo tiresome, since he's played on so many different stations. I would like to hear some local music (REAL local music, not music from some guy that lived here and took off to NY to start his music career) that we haven't heard on every classic rock/ oldies station every single day. I can only hope the Current plays mostly deep tracks.
As for attacking a fellow Current Subscriber because of his tastes- Whatever. I'm sure you all have been annoyed with artists that are popular too. Most of the people I know find Dylan intolerable after 3 or 4 songs.
Anyway, Bob Dylan, yeah, he's classic and he's from here- I just don't consider him a local musician. Almost none of the songs we hear of his were from when he lived here.
I'm (clearly) jaded because my rommate loves Dyaln and only listens to Dylan.
subterranean homesick blues is a must! love this.
I'm going to have to agree with all of the commenters who cannot stand Bob Dylan for more than a few songs. Hopefully the tributes will be made at the beginning of the hour so I can switch to another station if necessary.
As for summer music... anything that can be turned up with the windows down. I'm going to suggest "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" by the Scissor Sisters. Upbeat. Summer-y.
The Basement Tapes and Good as I Been to You are my favorite Bob Dylan albums! Rock on 89.3!
