This morning in our Music History segment, we noted that it's the anniversary of Bono receiving his honorary knighthood by the British Empire. Not being a British citizen, he's technically not allowed to be called "Sir," but he can still claim to be a "Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire," or KBE. That is excellent.

For today's 9:30 Coffee Break, who are some other pop musicians who have received honors from the British Empire?

Songs played:
Sir Elton John "Saturday's Alright for Fighting"
Dame Shirley Bassey "Goldfinger"
Sir Paul McCartney "Uncle Albert/Admirel Halsey"
Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, OBE (Dusty Springfield) "Son of a Preacher Man"
Man"Bob Geldof, KBE -- Boomtown Rats "She's so Modern"

Bob Geldof/Boomtown Rats
I Dont Like Mondays...I wonder if there is a "soundtrack" from The Wall to hear him perform Pink Floyd songs like Comfortably Numb.

Annie Lennox was given an OBE. I request "Walking on Broken Glass."

Anything by Robert Plant (with or without Jimmy Page) would work too.

I suppose we're in for a Beatles song because of Paul McCartney? And possibly Sir Elton too?

I second Julie Andrews - that woman could sing the phone book and it would be awesome!

Petula Clark - Downtown

Elton John - Madman Across the Water or Tiny Dancer

David Bowie - Star Man

And I also second Bob Geldof

Lady Gaga?

Eric Clapton!

You could honor Rodger Daltrey and Elton John in one song by playing the movie version of Pinball Wizard.
Otherwise Baba O'reilly or Amazing Journey for the Who would be awesome
Tiny Dancer or Rocket Man for Elton John.

I second the request for Annie Lennox-Walking on Broken Glass or Sweet Dreams

And for Julie Andrews (as mentioned above) how about something from Mary Poppins or Victor/Victoria!

Because there aren't any "ladies" that we can think of, what about "Lady" by Styx??

Helen Adu (Sade), Petula Clark, Annie Lennox and Kylie Minogue are all knighted but not dames. You could go with Dame Julie Andrews, but much more rockin' would be Dame Shirley Bassey - maybe "Goldfinger" or "History Repeating".

The Beatles cannot help that they KICKED so much ASS. Honors or not.

Just felt like I should say that as a pre-emptive defense.

Bob Geldof was not knighted. He refused on grounds that he would have to relinquish his Irish citizenship.
