Today is Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday when New Orleans becomes the world epicenter of partying, parades, and overall debauchery. So help us put together a little New Orleans-themed set today for the 9:30 Coffee Break. We'll take your suggestions for tunes about New Orleans, performed by New Orleans musicians, or just about things commonly associated with the Big Easy.
Songs played:
Professor Longhair "Mardi Gras in New Orleans"
Hank Williams "Jambalaya"
Spearhead "Red Beans and Rice"
The Bamboos "Voodoo Doll"
Ween "Voodoo Lady"
Muddy Waters "Baby Please Don't Go"
"New Orleans Is Sinking" The Tragically Hip
Baby Please Don't Go - Big Joe Williams or Muddy Waters
House of the Rising Sun - Animals
New Orleans Wins the War -- Randy Newman
That song by Steve Goodman/Arlo Guthrie . . .
New Orleans Instrumental No. 1 -- R.E.M.
Jambalaya - Hank Williams - not quite gumbo but it is a New Orleansish food!
New Orleans is Sinking-Tragically Hip.
Fever for the Bayou -- Tab Benoit
Oh please, please, please play "King of New Orleans" by beloved New Orleans band Better Than Ezra!
If you can't play that, then I second the request for "New Orleans is Sinking" by the Hip.
"The Gumbo Song" by Jimmy C. Newman
I think Janelle MonĂ¡e's "Neon Gumbo" is appropriate. Also, Dr. John's "Mardi Gras Mambo" is a must.
'King of New Orleans' by Better than Ezra
Harry Connick Jr.
Preservation Hall Band
Arlo Guthrie - City of New Orleans
For a New Orleanian in Mpls, please play any (or all) of the following:
"They All Ask'd for You" - The Meters (all about New Orleans - traditional Mardi Gras Song)
King of New Orleans - Better than Ezra
Mardi Gras Mambo
Go To The Mardi Gras by Professor Longhair.
Iko Iko by Dixie Cups
Walking to New Orleans by Fats Domino
Proud mary - Tina Turner
Take me back to new Orleans - Cowboy Mouth
Another song, kind of obscure:
"Dr. Jazz" by Squeeze references gumbo, jazz and all things New Orleans. It's on the "Frank" album.
"When The Saints Go Marching In" - Fats Domino
"Iko Iko" - Dr. John
Born on a Bayou - CCR
Evil Urges - My Morning Jacket
Strange Times - The Black Keys
Jubalee - Benji Hughes
New Low - Middle Class Rut
Still the One - Orleans
"House of the rising sun"- The Animals
"Bloodletting"- Concrete Blonde
"Talkin' Bout New Orleans" or "Mardi Gras Mambo" - The Meters
Cajun Country byHoodooGurus
"That Was Your Mother" is a song on Paul Simon's Graceland album that I've always liked, but I never truly appreciated how good it is until I had children of my own. It's also where I learned the word "Zydeco."
"House of the Rising Sun" - The Animals
I believe Greg Dulli lives in New Orleans full time now, anyway, I know he was living there when The Afghan Whigs put out 1965 and alot of the music was inspired by that. You could play "The Vampire Lanois"
Portugal. The Man - New Orleans
Congo Square - Sonny Landreath
Way Down Yonder in New Orleans - Louis Armstrong
Iko Iko - Dr. John
Tipitina -Professor. Longhair (Any song by The Prof)
Hey Pocky Away - The Meters
Walking to New Orleans - Fats Domino
"Treme Song" by John Boutte, theme from the slow developing, but awesome HBO show Treme.
And play some bad a** New Orleans (dixieland) jazz, I'm no expert, so you pick!
Hurricane J - The Hold Steady
How about some Arlo Guthrie, The City of New Orleans.
Anything by The Meters
I second "That was your mother" by Paul Simon. It is a great tribute to New Orleans and Clifton Chenier. Also, please play anything by Clifton Chenier "King of the Bayou". One of my favorites is "Tu Le Ton Son Ton".
How about "City of New Orleans" by Arlo Guthrie? I know it's about a train, but it mentions the city. And Arlo Guthrie is just awesome.
"French Quarter" by Delta Spirit
Two great New Orleans bands:
Twilight Singers are all New Orleans residents and have a great new album out on Sub pop. Please play anything off of it.
And The Meters!
"I Wish I Was in New Orleans" by Tom Waits
Prince Neb
Squirrel Nut Zippers.
King of New Orleans - Better than Ezra
I always think of Squirrel Nut Zippers...

"Big Whiskey and the Gru Grux King" by Dave Matthews Band
"Monday Night in New Orleans"
Kermit Ruffins
Anything from the Rads. New Orleans and the Radiators can imagine Jazz fest without them.
Lady Marmalade" by Labelle
"New Orleans" by Rancid
"Planet of New Orleans" by Dire Straits
OMG, where are the BRASS BAND suggestions?!?!?!!!!! (I already typed this, clicked 'Post', and it disappeated into the ether..... PLEASE PLEASE play "Feel Like Funkin It Up" by REBIRTH BRASS BAND!!!!! (complete with jungle monkey sounds at the beginning!) Or "Do Whatcha Wanna" by Rebirth.....OR anything by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. You gotta play a brass band tune in order to do any proper justice to Mardi Gras!!! Thank You! :-D HAPPY MARDI GRAS!!!
PUAAAGGHHHH. It's International WOmen's Day today and you pick Fat Tuesday??? What a horrible idea. Encouraging people to go out and get drunk, vomit and fornicate and generally act like monkeys is not the function of any public radio station in the world. Shame on you.
Is it too late to beg for "King of New Orleans" by BTE?
Ezralites represent!
It's coming in late, but I would love to hear a Jazz Funeral tune. Maybe "Just a Closer Walk With Thee"?
Sounds like Robert needs to get laid.
Ween is pretty annoying
Ween is all about the FUN. And the JAMMING.
I was caught in a meeting (no coffee break for me) and came back to find everyone's suggestions - I'm quite dissappointed there's not one Brass Band/Second Line Song here. "I feel like Funkin' It Up" "Do What Cha Wanna" "Aint' Nothin' But a Party" ANYTHING. Longhair, Dr. John and Brass Bands - that's Fat Tuesday to me!
I know I'm waaaay late here, but couldn't resist posting:
