Actually Joe Strummer of The Clash died on Dec 22nd 2002 but we'll be keeping his spirit alive Wednesday by playing a few of his tracks throughout the day. Some of his friends keep working for the causes that he held dear through Strummerville.
There's a foundation supporting new bands and a recent radio tribute on the BBC by the legendary DJ Don Letts. You can even buy a Xmas Card painted by Joe!
Happy Strummer Day and what's you fave Strummer song?
'Tennessee Rain' from the Walker soundtrack. Full of joy, and perfect for a campfire setting. A cheer for St. Joe!
The Hold Steady
"Constructive Summer"
Contains the line "Let's raise a glass to St. Joe Strummer,..."
"Yalla Yalla" was always a favorite for me and brother. In it, Joe says "we're forgetting all those best Tae Kwon Do moves / On a barrel of beer." This line made us believe, like Joe, that music does have the power to unite people, that music shows us the value of peace and love like nothing else.
(song is from Rock Art and the X-ray Style)
"Mega Bottle Ride" off Global a-Go-Go is an especially poignant track and personal favorite of mine.
Mondo Bongo
At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, there's a movie at the beginning of your tour. In that movie Joe Strummer talks about the connection between a live band and its audience and when they connect it's magic! Oh yeah! RIP Joe.
Long Shadow
Rudie Can't Fail...London Calling is the greatest album ever recorded. Joe I miss you...I wished The Clash would of reunited when you were alive. You were not a phony rock star...you talked the talk...walked the walk. Our world was better because of you.
