Tomorrow, I will take another big step in becoming a Minnesotan. I will make the journey up 35W to Duluth. But this isn't any old weekend drive, this is a journey with Jeremy Messersmith, as part of The Current Road Trip. Join us at Beaner's Central for a free interview/performance around 7:00 p.m. Then hang out after the show for a meet-and-greet session where you can get to know Jeremy and The Current a little better.

Everyone keeps telling me how beautiful the drive is and suggesting some of the places in Duluth that must be seen, like Lake Superior and the lift bridge at night. I'm looking forward to viewing the changing fall colors. Jeremy has mentioned that we'll be passing by some decent thrift/vintage shops. But I want to experience some of the more "touristy" sights along the way, as well.

I've been researching attractions that will be close to our route, and I've found a couple of statues that just might be worth stopping for. First, The Voyageur statue near Pine City. Just a bit north, near Barnum, there's another statue I might have to check out. He's known to locals as "Big Louie" and a friend of mine snapped this photo during his honeymoon a while back.

Do you have any "MUST SEE" recommendations for the trip?

If we wind up staying in Duluth overnight, can you suggest a place that will allow Jeremy to get away with these kinds of shenanigans (or at least a place with a comparable bedspread)?

Sliders in Hinckley. We used to stop at Tobies, but they've been very rude that last few times we've been there. Try the Suites Hotel in Canal Park, it's great and close to the cool stuff.

Hi there!
I consider myself a Duluthian since I've lived here for almost six years now. I'm so bummed I can't make it to the show at Beaner's on Saturday.
However, if you all end up staying in town, please check out the following suggestions if you can! Near Beaner's, on 118 S 27th Ave W., is the Duluth Grill. They have an amazing variety of foods to choose from on their menu! (An old Ember's restaurant transformed!)
Also, check out everything in Canal Park! Down by the Lift Bridge, check out Amazing Grace for coffee or breakfast. Lunch and dinner is a must at the Lake Ave. Cafe OR the Smokehouse across the hall (in Dewitt Seitz blg.).
Hope that helps! Sorry for the late entry. Hope I'm not too late:)

The boardwalk along Lake Superior in Canal Park is beautiful! And you'll get to see the Aerial Lift Bridge at the same time and maybe even see a ship come in. There's lots of restaurants in that area as well.

If you go up to Enger Tower, you'll get a fantastic view of the lake, Duluth and Superior!

Can't wait for the show! I'll be making my own 2-hour drive up for it. :)

Barb, I lived in Duluth for a little over 4 years and LOVE that city. If you have the time you should drive at least part of Skyline Parkway. I'd recommend starting down at the mouth of the river, driving up Seven Bridges Road and on to Hawk Ridge. If you can, go all the way to Enger Tower. Absolutely stunning views all the way.

For food I highly recommend "Hacienda del Sol" on Superior Street. It's my all time favorite funky Mexican restaurant and has been a Duluth institution for at least 30 years. I make a point of going there when I'm in Duluth.

Which reminds me of the "Positively Third Street" Bakery (yes, it's on Third Street). It's a wonderful little earthy, organic granola-y baker with fabulous chocolate chip cookies. I lived across the street from that place when I was a student and had ample opportunity to sample their wares.

For romance nothing beats walking Park Point beach late at night with your honey. It has the loveliest view of Duluth. Might be a bit cold for that at this time of year, but if you could drive across the lift bridge & down to the Park Point Beach during the day.
