Today's 9:30 Coffee Break is a salute to the mouth organ, otherwise known as the harmonica. We're putting together a broad cross-section of tunes showcasing the world's favorite pocket-sized instrument.
Songs played:
The The Dogs of Lust
Stevie Wonder "Fingertips pt 2"
Bob Dylan "Subterranean Homesick Blues"
The Beatles "I Should've Known Better"
Rush doesn't play any harmonica! But in honor of pledge drive I would like to request "The Spirit of Radio" by Rush. R&RHOFin 2011!
Bring It On Home - Led Zep
What I Like About You - The Romantics
"Suicide Blonde" - INXS
"What I Like About You" - The Romantics
"Good Girls Don't" - The Knack
white and lazy--the replacements
the wizard--black sabbath
comes a time--neil young
low rider--war
Piano Man - Billy Joel
Far Far Away - Wilco
"Been Set Free" - Son Volt
"Nebraska" - Bruce Springsteen
"Middle Of The Road" - The Pretenders
So I don't know if any of their songs use a harmonica, but there's a story behind this band suggestion:
KC and the Sunshine Band
My dad grew up in Chicago and I always loved this story:
One time he was at a small club and back in his day, Dad was quite the harmonica player. There was some unknown band playing and they asked him to come up and play/jam with them. He gets up on stage, starts playing and about half an hour later, makes a mistake and then accidentally yells, "Oh F**k!" right into the microphone for everyone to hear. The band tells him that he's got to get off stage, because they're family friendly and that language doesn't fly. That band was KC and the Sunshine Band.
So in honor of my dad being kicked off stage by KC, if you can't find anything by them, could we play something by The Rolling Stones, his favorite band?
Nobody's Fault But Mine--Led Zep
One of the best harmonica solos ever.
Fingertips, part 2 by Stevie Wonder
Still Ill - The Smiths
Get Black - The Ponys
Bob Dylan - Tangled Up in Blue
Justin Townes Earle - Wanderin' (JTE is resuming his tour at the end of next month - can't wait to see him again!!)
boogie on reggae woman--stevie wonder
(or, really, so many songs by him....the master!)
the river--bruce springsteen
(or thunder road. or atlantic city.)
i stand accused--elvis costello
You have to play some Blues Traveler, I've always enjoyed "Crash Burn" it really showcases the Popper's skills.
Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Neil Young... those guys were "alright" too ;-)
Trampled by Turtles - Drinking in the Morning
I saw their show in Duluth last night--stupendous.
The Times they are a Changin' - Bob Dylan
Blues Singer - Dead Milkmen
Love Me Do - Beatles
Blowin' in the Wind - Bob Dylan
"Suicide Blond" - INXS
Find the River - REM
With Love from me to you - Beatles
Got in late - I'm surprised that local legend and one of the best blues harp player Tony "Little Sun" Glover wasn't mentioned.
