One of Sufjan Stevens' trademarks is that he always marches to the beat of his own drum, a trend which continued today, with the digital release of his new EP, All Delighted People. The record is eight songs long, but includes two 10+ minute tracks and winds up clocking in at about an hour. That's right -- an hour-long EP. It is available to stream for free or download for $5 at Sufjan's website.
A few ruminations:
The EP will be released in physical format -- CD & vinyl -- later this fall. As Pitchfork noted, it will probably be the world's first EP released on double LP.
When you purchase the album, you get an email saying that payment has been made to Lowell Brams. Brams is Sufjan's stepfather. If I ever start releasing albums, I want to funnel the payments through my dad.
For everyone asking when Sufjan will release his follow-up to 2005's Illinois: in the last 5 years, he's released a B-sides compilation (The Avalanche), a remix album (Run Rabbit Run), an orchestral work (The BQE) and now an EP (All Delighted People). Maybe Sufjan Stevens "gets" the evolving music business better than any of us could imagine.
really enjoy the "classic rock" version of the title track, although the original was a fantastic gem to close his 400 bar set
