Jill and Steve Interview The Dead Weather

As rock personalities go, Jack White has clearly assured his place in the pantheon of giants - and he's only 35. Not only does he seem in no danger of crashing and burning anytime soon, he seems completely in control of his world: songwriter, blistering guitarist, record label owner, iconic frontman dressed in iconic color scheme, producer and creative partner with other veteran icons. Lately, add to that "regular old group member" with his ventures outside the confines of The White Stripes, such as The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather.

Of course, it's probably naive to think Jack White is merely one equal member of four in these latter projects - at heart, it is categorically a "leader" personality that he possesses, and it's hard to imagine him ceding too much control over the process of anything he would sign on for. Still, it's clear that he enjoys the fact that The Dead Weather, like the aforementioned Raconteurs, is a four piece, with strong characters inhabiting each of the four roles. And he also gets to enjoy drumming for a change.

Jill and I sat down with The Dead Weather when they were in town recently, and we chatted with all of them about what it's like to be in more than one band at once, as well as the joys of vinyl as "tangible musical object" and a number of other subjects close to Jack's heart such as his Nashville-based studio and record label Third Man.

Just saw the DW in Denver. Seeing Jack White play in a small venue reminds me of being able to go back in time and see someone like Hendrix or Janis Joplin play. Jack White is an American treasure.
