Friday Coffee Break: Get Your Prog On!

We've got not one but two reasons to honor Rush today: first is, of course, Rush's appearance at the State Fair tonight, where they're promising to play their 1982 album Moving Pictures in its entirety. The second is that it's guitarist Alex Lifeson's 57th birthday today. Happy birthday Alex!

So you know what we have to do today for the 9:30 Coffee Break - because somebody has to do it and Jill and I are simply the people for the job (along with you, that is). That's devote the whole set to some of the giants of prog rock. Let's do this.

Songs played:

Rush, "Vital Signs"
Yes, "Long Distance Runaround / The Fish"
King Crimson, "Cat Food"
Genesis, "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)"

So the Coffee Break will include one-and-a-half songs . . .

How about some Godspeed You! Black Emperor..... or for a shorter song, something by Thee Silver Mt. Zion.

Play "Working Man" from Rush's first album. Great song, short enough and they never play it in concert. If I knew they would play this song, I may have decided go to their show tonight.

No prog rock set would be complete without the elders of Prog Rock......King Crimson and Genesis (Gabriel era, obviously).

Genesis - while I would LOVE to hear Supper's Ready (the anthem of all things prog) in its entirety it simply can't fit. So I will request "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight" or "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)"

King Crimson - "Trio" or "Sailor's Tale"

Procol Harum- Whiter Shade of Pale
Something by ELO or possibly Coheed and Cambria?

Can't forget Yes - All Good People; Owner of a Lonely Heart

I second "Working Man" by Rush. I have to admit, I'm not a big Rush fan, but I love this song.

Yay, another coffee break I can contribute to! But you're making it very limiting by taking only "radio playable" prog songs... :)

I suggest the likes of Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, and of course King Crimson... I'll see if I can find some shorter songs to help you out.

I'll stop begging for ELP now after tomorrow. :)

Hows aboot "Entre Nous" by Rush?

Posted by Wayne Murray | August 27, 2010 9:26 AM

How about something by Spock's Beard? I don't think I've ever heard any of their songs, but with a name like that you gotta do it.

Posted by Andrew S. | August 27, 2010 9:27 AM

An often missed gem, and from Moving Pictures too. Vital Signs!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is a gut punch that I'm on a plane tonight instead of at the grandstand to witness this perfection. I get to vacation w/ the in-laws. YES!!!!!!!!!

Ween- "The Mollusk" (or anything from)

You should do 2-3 hours of prog rock ('cause the songs are so friggin' long!).

ELO- "Tightrope"

Rush- "2112" (the whole 20+ minute song)

or how about something from "(music from) The Elder" (KISS's one attempt at prog rock, haha!)

Posted by Seamus | August 27, 2010 9:32 AM

I second "Pinball Wizard"

Posted by Mike | August 27, 2010 9:32 AM

Wow, it's all falling into place why I'm such a geek now- too much prog rock as a kid! Loving the Yes, thanks!

Not one mention of Zappa. A Token of My Extreme?

Posted by Jake K | August 27, 2010 9:51 AM

Oh my god. I was sitting here thinking, "They HAVE to play some King Crimson," and there it is, "Cat Food". You guys made me so happy this morning.

Posted by Kiri Namtvedt | August 27, 2010 9:52 AM

this was nice to do, in honor of the Rush show. But frankly, your radio station shouldn't be playing these bands just during a *theme* segment, but instead, in REGULAR ROTATION and by REQUEST. If someone wanted to request to hear Echoes by Pink Floyd, even if it's 23 minutes long, the station could play it.
