Today's 9:30 Coffee Break is a showcase for singers whose vocal arsenal includes at least two seperate and distinct singing voices. It can be someone who has a distinct whisper and howl, someone who goes between falsetto and non-falsetto regularly, or someone who actually sound like they could be two seperate people.
Songs played:
Bjork "It's Oh So Quiet"
Guns N Roses "Knockin On Heaven's Door"
Prince "Kiss"
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Here Comes My Girl"
Tom Waits "Somewhere (from West Side Story)"
"Sweet Child O' Mine" - Guns 'N Roses
"Kiss" - Prince
Tom Waits, Prince, Eels (E)
Axl! Sweet Child O' Mine
Kat Bjelland from Babes in Toyland- she'll sings oh so soft and sweet, then in a flash, screams her head off. I love it.
It's Oh So Quiet - Bjork
Well, Freddy mercury had about a dozen voices Bohemian rhapsody.. and of course Steve miller would regularly do the classic low gravely voice behind the ultra pop lead vocals. Wide river is a pretty good example.
Mike Patton from Faith No More uses many different voices to portray different characters. He also will go from an R&B croon to a Cookie Monster bark in the space of one song..
maybe Midlife Crisis or Underwater Love.. any song really, I suppose.
Weezer - Hash Pipe
Bjork - It's oh so quiet
Stevie Wonder, I Was Made to Love Her
Thom Yorke- Jigsaw Falling into Place
Iggy Pop- T.V. Eye
Black Francis- Something Against You
Tracy Bonham - Mother, Mother
Vultures - John Mayer
Helter Skelter - The Beatles
PJ Harvey's song "Rid of Me" -- there's the low voice, then the loud voice, then the really creepy falsetto. That's three. Top that!
Tim Buckley - Buzzin' Fly
He's got about 5 different vocal inflections.
Kiss Off – Violent Femmes
Me & Bobbie McGee – Janis Joplin
Trent Reznor has a soft whisper, to a nasally wine, to a vicious scream.
Axel Rose, all over the spectrum as well
Toxicity - System of a Down
David Bowie has continually altered his vocals throughout his career. Early songs like 'In the of the Morning' or 'Hey Mr. Gravedigger' from the Deram Anthology show some of that.
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again (just because of the scream)
Lazy Eye - Silversun Pickups
Björk - It's Oh So Quiet
Prince - Get Off (who has multiple voices in this song)
Tori Amos - she has multiple voices
And welcome back ,Steve!
I'm Down by The Beatles might show off Paul McCartney's range better than Helter Skelter... I would put Paul on the list of singers with two or more voices for sure though.
Putting out Fire with Gasoline - David Bowie
Steve - Here's the phrase you're searching for:
"I know you are but what am I!"
Can't listen to GNR without thinking of Axel beating women.
Janis Joplin - Bobby McGee
You Make Me Feel Like Dancing - Leo Sayer - I can't believe you missed this one!
p.s. the comment you should have made to illustrate pee wee herman's voice is "i know you are but what am i?" ;)
