Have you heard? May 25th is International Geek Pride Day; the day for all geeks to be proud of their geekdom and proclaim it far and wide. Talk about science fiction and fantasy movies, dress unfashionably, feel liberated from the need to engage in sports (or even talking about them), and enjoy lots of jokes at the expense of those less intelligent than you.

Let's make a geek set today for the 9:30 Coffee Break. Songs by geeks or about geeky subjects, or both.

"We Are Devo"- Devo

"Buddy Holly"- Weezer

"Star Wars Theme"- John Williams

"Hot and Nerdy"- Wierd Al Yankovic

A topic near and dear to my heart! There are MANY excellent options here, but honestly, whenever I think of "geek rock" I IMMEDIATELY think of Talking Heads; particularly the first three albums. My selection is "Electricity" off of Fear Of Music...

Blitzen Trapper - Sci Fi Kid

Thomas Dolby-- She blinded me with science.

Trio--da da da

You can't do a geek set without The Geeks Were Right by The Faint.

You have to play Weezer, but I think "In The Garage" is more nerd appropriate than "Buddy Holly". Anything by Coheed & Cambria as they sing about wizards and Lord of the RIngs references are aplenty. And of course, "She Blinded Me With Science" by Thomas Dolby.

white and nerdy--weird al
in the garage--weezer
science is real--they might be giants (or almost anything by them, for that matter!)

In the Garage by Weezer. Geeks everywhere revel in the references to Dungeons & Dragons.

My Morning Jacket - Librarian

Geek Stink Breath is appropriate but.... noty >.>

Geek rock always makes me think of the Weez, hands down.

Though I would like to second "Underground" by Ben Folds ... good call.

Posted by Emily | May 25, 2010 9:24 AM

They Might Be Giants is an obvious choice -- I say go doubly geeky and play one of their "educational" songs:

- Mammal
- James K. Polk
- The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas
- Meet James Ensor
