The New Pornographers has a new album out titled Together and it is our featured CD of the week! We'll be hearing multiple tracks from the record all week including "Crash Years", "Moves", "Silver Jenny Dollar", "Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk" and "Your Hands (Together)". Together is in stores now. It all began in 1996 in Vancouver, Canada when A. C. Newman gathered the talents of The Evaporators' John Collins, Destroyer's Dan Bejar, cartoonist/filmmaker Blaine Thurier, drummer Fisher Rose, and guest vocalist Neko Case to form The New Pornographers. Rose eventually left in 1999, and Limblifter/Age of Electric drummer Kurt Dahle and guitarist Todd Fancey joined the Canadian supergroup. Five albums later they continue to make cerebral power pop that continues to go where no other pop tune has gone emphasizing it's eccentricities as something that's quintessentially, endearingly human and not necessarily just bizarre.
Beach House "Zebra" from their new album Teen Dream in stores now. Baltimore residents Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand (the niece of French composer Michel Legrand) formed the duo Beach House in 2005. Despite their name they tend to write dreamy but dark songs that are quite lush, hypnotic and haunting. To elevate that mood even more they recorded Teen Dream in a converted church with producer/engineer Chris Coady, who has also worked with TV on the Radio and Blonde Redhead.
Dessa "Dixon's Girl" from their new album A Badly Broken Code in stores now. Born Margret Wander, Dessa aka Dessa Darling is part of the Minneapolis hip hop collective Doomtree. She began writing and performing in poetry slams throughout the twin cities which eventually lead her to be introduced to her Doomtree crew. A Badly Broken Code is her first full length national release.
Earl Greyhound "Oye Vaya" from their new album Suspicious Package in stores now. Earl Greyhound consists of vocalist/guitarist Matt Whyte, bassist/vocalist Kamara Thomas and drummer Christopher Bear. Huge fans of T. Rex, Big Star and Badfinger Earl Greyhound is a hodgepodge of hard rock, metal and loud pop. Suspicious Package is their second release.
Florence And The Machine "Dog Days Are Over" from their new album Lungs in stores now. South London singer and songwriter Florence Mary Leontine Welch manages the group Florence and The Machine with the Camden-based DJ duo the Queens of Noize. Compaired to contemporaries like Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, and Kate Nash, Florence's power packed vocal delivery accompanied by the varied production of Queens of Noize, create a debut release that's knocked everyone onto their backside with songs that can be both anthemic and intimate.
Kings Go Forth "One Day" from their new album The Outsiders Are Back in stores now. Andy Noble of Milwaukee, WI is a huge lover of funk and soul music. So much so that he decided to create his own ten peice funk revival group called, Kings Go Forth.
The Kissaway Trail "SDP" from their new album Sleep Mountain in stores now. Kissaway Trail hails from Odense, Denmark and is often compaired to bands like Arcade Fire. There's not much known on this band just yet but we're sure they'll be making a name for themselves in no time with their indie rock anthems.
Nada Surf "Enjoy The Silence" from their new album If I Had A Hi-Fi in stores . Nada Surf have been around a lot longer than you'd think, 1991 to be exact. If I Had A Hi-Fi is their 7th album to date and it consists of Nada Surf covering tunes by folks like Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, The Go Betweens, Spoon, The Soft Pack and many others!
Rufus Wainwright "Martha" from their new album All Days Are Night: Songs For Lulu in stores . With a sound that's part pop , part cabaret, and even part opera Rufus is the son of folk music legends Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle. All Days Are Night: Songs For Lulu is a very stark and deeply personal collection of songs. Many of which are related to or about his mother, Kate McGarrigle, who died this past year of an extended illness. There's no theatrics on this record. Just Rufus, a piano and some melodies. It might not be his catchiest record but it's definetly his most introspective.
