I don't know about you, but I feel darn lucky to live in an area with as great a local music scene as we do. Friday morning at 8am we'll debut new tracks from two of our longtime favorites - Jeremy Messersmith and Cloud Cult.
Two years after the release of The Silver City, Jeremy Messersmith is back with his new album, The Reluctant Graveyard, and moves from tackling our city's transportation issues to ruminations on the dead and dying. But never has such a morose topic sounded so glorious - as Jeremy and co-producer Andy Thompson mine pop's treasure trove of the mid/late '60s to pick up sonic cues from the likes of the Kinks, Beach Boys, Zombies, Beatles, Monkees, Left Banke, and others - peppering this modern classic with the feel and touch of one of rock's most imaginative periods. Our first dip into the record "Violet!" is case in point. And nothing beats 4-part harmonies leading into not one but two key change modulations - sonic bliss from one of our favorite musicians in the Twin Cities.
Also returning to action after a long break is Cloud Cult. The band fronted by Craig Minowa and including not one but two live action painters at their gigs have been slowly getting back on the live scene with a few high profile shows over the past few months whlie working on the forthcoming Light Chasers full length. Back in January, the band leaked us a work in progress track called "Running With the Wolves," that we debuted from the DJ booth at First Avenue at the sold out Current 5th Birthday Party show to much acclaim. Now we can finally play it on the radio, as the song kicks off a digital EP arriving on Earth Day (4/20).
Along wtih great new local music on the air from Dosh, Trampled By Turtles, Dessa, Communist Daughter, Peter Wolf Crier, and more, we're proud of what's happening right here, right now. Let us know what you think about the state of the scene below.
