Paul Westerberg on Alex Chilton

Alex Chilton was an amazing, uncompromising trailblazing artist, who helped redefine what an artist could or should be, and inspired countless musicians over the years. One of those inspired by him was our own Paul Westerberg, who (literally) wrote the song "Alex Chilton." Beseiged for comments by the press (apparently if you title a song after a person, you become their media spokesman when they are no longer around?), Paul wrote a nice tribute to Alex in the New York Times. If you missed it on Saturday, you can read it here.

I liked how he started it: "How does one react to the death of one’s mentor? My mind instantly slammed down the inner trouble-door that guards against all thought, emotion, sadness. Survival mode." Another "mentor" or, in my case, exemplary human being passed away last week, the same day as Alex Chilton: Charlie Gillett, host of the Sound of the World.
What is going on in the world that all the good people are leaving??!?!?!
