Prince - Cause and Effect

Prince - Cause and Effect

Here's what hosts Steve Seel and Jill Riley had to say:
The tune is like a little mini-symphony of Prince-ness. It's got a few different sections, some that have that classic funky, sexy, sinewy Prince and some with his more rockish tendencies ... come to think of it, that makes it all classic Prince. Except the rock-y parts might be the hardest he's ever rocked, which is pretty notable in and of itself. - Steve Seel

When I heard "Cause and Effect" for the first time, the term "rock anthem" instantly came to mind. The new song will delight your senses and melt your face. - Jill Riley

What do you think?

No word on when the next Dan Wilson solo record will land on our desks, but as he continues writing and working with other artists, he took some time out to post this gorgeous clip of a new song called "Everything Green" the other day on YouTube. Check it out!

Birthdays:

Singer Fats Domino is 82.
Singer Mitch Ryder is 65.
Keyboardist Jonathan Cain of Journey is 60.
Singer Michael Bolton is 57.

Today in:

1955 - R&B singer LaVern Baker appealed to Congress to revise the Copyright Act of 1909 that black recording artists be protected from note-for-note copying of previously recorded R&B tunes and arrangements by white artists. Yes, this used to be legal.
1970 - The Beatles album "Hey Jude" was released in the U.S. and Canada. It was made up of singles that were previously unavailable in the U.S.
1980, Island Records reps offered U2 a recording contract after witnessing their performance at Dublin's National Boxing Stadium before an audience of 2,400.
1993 - Police in Augusta, Ga. fined singer Bobby Brown $580 for pretending to have sex with one of his backup singers during a concert. She also was fined $580.

Birthday Highlight:

We celebrate Johnny Cash's birthday today; he was born on this date in 1932 (passing away in September of 2003). What can be written or said about Johnny that hasn't already been said? He's practically like the Beatles in that sense. So we simply honor Johnny today with a track of his last album, the new - and second pothsumously-released album - American 6, Ain't No Grave ... the title track

Monday: Bent Fabric, "Relax With Bent Fabric" (1968)
This Danish piano man is best known in the United States for his 1962 instrumental "Alley Cat." "Relax With Bent Fabric" was yet another installment in his piano catalog. We played "The Pink Elephant."

Tuesday: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, "More American Graffiti" (1979)
George Lucas did a fine job putting together the soundtrack to this sequel movie. This was only released on vinyl and is currently out of print (you won't find it on a CD like you will the "American Graffiti" soundtrack. The voice of Wolfman Jack is sprinkled throughout the track listing. We played Country Joe and The Fish, "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag."

Wednesday: Split Enz, "True Colors" (1980)
The New Zealand band's big breakthrough, shedding their too-bizarre-for-common-folk trappings and paring down to a more melodic New Wave style. "True Colors" contains their first big hit, "I Got You," but we played the other (less often heard) single, the ballad "I Hope I Never."

Thursday: "The Soma Records Story: Shake It For Me! Vol. 1" (1998)
An amazing collection of Midwestern garage rock bands that recorded for Soma Records in the 1960's. The Castaways, The Deacons and The Embermen (they had a song with the lyrics "fat girl, fat girl, get out of town!") are a few examples. We played the unreleased "Charlie Brown" as covered by The Chancellors.

Friday: Prince, "Purple Rain" (1984)
In celebration of the world debut of "Cause and Effect," we pulled out a Prince classic for Random Vinyl. The song that segues out of "I Would Die 4 U" is "Baby I'm a Star."

Honey-Do List: the Great Cash covers

This week Johnny Cash would have turned 78. He's been gone for 7 years now, but he certainly isn't forgotten! He even has a new album. At the top of my list for Saturday is, "play some CASH!" It's becoming an annual Honey-do assigment.

In Johnny's 50 some year career he was fantastic songwriter. He wrote songs like "Man In Black," "Folsom Prison Blues" and more recently, "Like the 309." But, one of the things I always loved about Cash is when he sings others artists songs. He always had the god-given knack of getting to it's essence. Straight to the songs core.

On my Saturday shift (10am to 3pm) I'll feature some of some of Johnny's greatest renditions of "covers"....

Today, I'm wearin' black for Johnny...
