(updated below)
It's not the 9:30 Coffee Break today, it's the Prison Break. Prison songs! Why? No particular reason except we've never done it before and there are a lot that would work. The jail, the cage, the big house ... let's have your suggestions.
Update: As expected, a couple of songs came in ahead of most of the others; that would be selections #1 and #4.
1) Thin Lizzy, "Jailbreak"
2) M. Ward, "Jailbird"
3) XTC, "Ball and Chain"
4) Johnny Cash, "Folsom Prison Blues"
5) Social Distortion, "Prison Bound"
“Prison Girls” – Neko Case
“Black Steel In the Hour Of Chaos” – Public Enemy
“What Jail Is Really Like” – Afghan Whigs
And two "thinkers" for ya....
“We Love You” – Rolling Stones
“Moon Over Marin” – Dead Kennedys
Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
Jailbird - M Ward
Ball and Chain - Social Distortion
Hurricane - Bob Dylan
...assuming you want to play a 9 minute song...
Thin Lizzy, "Tonight there's gonna be a jail break"!! (A long-shot, I know)
Doin' Time for Bein' Young - James Intveld (from the Cry Baby soundtrack)
“54-46 (That’s My Number)” – Toots and the Maytals
"Las Cruces Jail" - Two Gallants
"Saint John" - Cold War Kids ... old Saint John on death row, he's just waitin' for a pardon ...
What Jail Is Like - Afghan Whigs
Black Steel in The Hour of Chaos - Public Enemy
Prison Sex - Tool
Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy
"Jailhouse Rock" - Elvis Presley
"Jailhouse Tears" - Lucinda Williams w/Elvis Costello (beware: Lu drops the f-bomb in this song).
PS. On your home page, the promo for "Goodbye to the "Aughts" Weekend" incorrectly lists Jan. 16-18 as Pesidents' Day weekend. It is actually Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend.
Old Time Relijun - Jail
Led Zeppelin - Gallows Pole
Black River Killer - Blitzen Trapper
Public Jestering by Judge Winchester and the Upsetters
Judge Dread by Prince Buster
cocaine blues- Woody Guthrie (also covered by cash)
How about "Sacred Love" by Bad Brains?
H.R. apparently literally phoned in his vocals from a jail house phone..
You Never Even Called Me By My Name
David Allan Coe
Mom getting out of prison counts....right?
How about one from an icon, Bob Dylan: "I Shall Be Released"? Or you could have The Band doing it as an added bonus.....
Between the Bars by Elliot Smith
Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley
18 and Life - Skid Row
Christmas in prison - john prine
jailbird - exploding hearts
Tom Waits - Fish in the Jailhouse.
Second on Black River Killer by Blitzen Trapper
Jailhouse Rock by the Blues Brothers
I think of prison as being a scary place, so it seems reasonable that any songs should give the impact of prison as being scary, especialy those that are on death row.
With that said, I know that it is unlikely that my suggestions will be played, but I think they are two outstanding performances of two very moving songs.
I would like to hear the Diamanda Galas version of Iron Lady or 25 Minutes To Go. Both tracks are from her album "Malediction & Prayer".
Gotta do Folsom Prison.
There has to be a Leadbelly song that fits the theme, but can't think of what it would be.
This Place is a Prison - The Postal Service
"Prisoners" - The Rain Parade
"I'm Just a Prisoner" - Unforscene
"Black Steel" - Tricky
"Back on the Chain Gang" - Pretenders
I Fought the Law - The Clash
Guns of Brixton - The CLash
Clampdown - The Clash - etc. they have a theme going
Hard Time Killing Floor Blues - O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack
In The Jailhouse Now - also from O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack
Rude Boys Outta Jail - The Specials
You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison - My Chemical Romance
Chain Gang by San Cooke
In the Jailhouse Now from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack
Walking Spanish - Tom Waits
Chain Gang - Sam Cooke
Howe about Modest Mouse "The Ocean Breathes Salty"
Back on the Chain Gang - Pretenders
Been Caught Stealing - Jane's Addiction
It's Hard to Wave in Handcuffs - The Replacements
The Mercy Seat - Nick Cave
The Specialist - Interpol
Traci Lords is who you're trying to think of, Jill! She was in "Cry Baby."
I third Black River Killer by Blitzen Trapper!
Blitzen Trapper - Black River Killer
Feel So Good - Richard Thompson
Stay Free - The Clash (although I also love the Pete Wylie cover versions)
These are both songs about getting out of prison - so I don't know if that fits with the theme.
Care of Cell 44 - The Zombies is an awesome song.
and of course...
Jailbreak - ACDC
